Hara, assistant professor in the Department of World Languages and Literatures, was selected for the honor because of his tremendous contribution to the Japanese program at UAB.

These exceptional students will each receive $2,500 scholarships and serve as an ambassador of UAB and as leaders of the UAB Future Blazers Alumni.

The STARTALK Chinese language learning program, presented by the UAB Department of World Languages and Literatures for students in grades 9-14, includes online learning and a residential summer camp.

Studying abroad as a Gilman Scholar helps students gain professional skills, build language proficiencies and develop knowledgeable perspectives of the world to help them succeed in their careers.

Assistant Professor of English Joseph Wood is selected for the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award to Georgia, while Associate Professor of Spanish John T. Maddox IV, Ph.D., is selected for the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award to Brazil.

The UAB Department of World Languages and Literatures began offering the Global Seal of Biliteracy to its students in 2020 — the first university in Alabama to do so.

“Refugees, Empathy, and Human Rights” is a nationwide traveling exhibition featuring contemporary portraits and poetic stories illustrating the challenges of refugees building new lives in the United States.

The new building will be located on the corner of 10th Avenue South and 14th Street South on the southwest corner of the Campus Green.
