Overview
This half-day workshop is targeted at those who wish to learn successful strategies for securing winning proposals from the US Department of Agriculture. It is taught by experienced faculty who have received USDA grants and who serve as evaluators on USDA review panels and by USDA program staff. The focus of the workshop will be on explicating the types of education and research awards USDA supports and providing insights into what projects are deemed innovative and impactful by USDA. Lectures and discussion will include opportunities to address questions that will enable attendees to better develop their own USDA projects.

Panelists:
Laura Bellows Ph.D. MPH RD
Dr. Bellows is an Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist whose research focuses broadly on the development and assessment of communityâ€informed interventions related to diet, physical activity, and health. She has received funding from USDA through various mechanisms over a 15-year career with Extension, including AFRI Childhood Obesity Prevention program; Rural Health and Safety Education; and SNAPâ€Ed. Dr. Bellows current research examines eating habits and activity patterns in early childhood, specifically in health disparate populations (low-income, Hispanic, rural settings, and limited health literacy). She received her BS from Miami University (Ohio) in Exercise Science, her MPH/RD from the University of Michigan and her Ph.D. in Community Nutrition from Colorado State University. In 2011, Dr. Bellows was awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) from President Barack Obama.
Claire Zizza Ph.D. RD
Dr. Zizza is an associate professor in the Department of Nutrition, Dietetics, and Hospitality Management at Auburn University. Dr. Zizza’s research focuses on dietary behaviors and the factors, such as age, that influence these behaviors. Her research also examines the health and wellâ€being of people who do not have access at all times to a health-promoting diet. Dr. Zizza completed a fellowship at the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research, UNC, Chapel Hill. She earned her Ph.D. in Nutrition Epidemiology with a minor in Epidemiology from the School of Public Health at the UNC, Chapel Hill. She has her Bachelor of Science in Foods and Nutrition from Kansas State University and a Master’s degree from Arizona University. Before going back to school for her doctoral degree, Dr. Zizza worked for seven years at the United States Department of Agriculture, first at the Human Nutrition Information Service and then at the Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion. She serves on the Board of Editors of the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and Board of Associate Editors of Health Behavior and Policy Review.
