Researchers in the School of Public Health are recruiting college students age 19 and older who smoke cigarettes (at least 5 cigarettes per day). Participants will take part in an educational counseling session. You do NOT have to want to quit smoking to participate. Participation involves coming to our center for one 30-minute orientation session, one 60-minute educational counseling session, and two 15-minute follow-up sessions. You will be asked to fill out some questionnaires, abstain from smoking overnight, and smoke a cigarette that we will provide you. You will be offered an 8-week supply of the nicotine patch that you may use if you wish. You will have the opportunity to be compensated a total of $75 cash for your participation. The UAB Department of Nutrition Sciences is conducting a research study to evaluate the effectiveness of an investigational drug to treat Type 2 DM. To qualify, you must be 18 years old or older, diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, kidney disease and have risk factors for a cardiovascular event (such as heart attack and stroke). The Research of Eating and Activity for Child Health (REACH) Lab is looking for children with overweight/obesity ages 8-12 and one parent/caregiver to participate in a family-based treatment for childhood obesity. The treatment will consist of 1.5 hour weekly evening group meetings for 6 months. Treatment will incorporate changes in diet and physical activity, and provide education on various topics in nutrition, physical activity and other aspects of health and well-being. If you are due to receive your MMR vaccination and are ages 18 or older, are healthy, without autoimmune disorders (non-immunocompromised), have never had an allergic reaction to any vaccine, and you are willing to have blood drawn three times during the study then you may qualify for a clinical trial seeking to identify biomarkers that may help researchers improve the effectiveness of the MMR vaccine. The Flu Vaccine study is a Phase II study assessing safety, reactogenicity, and immunogenicity of a Sanofi Pasteur A/H7N9 inactivated Influenza vaccine administered intramuscularly with or without AS03 adjuvant. This study is open to healthy adults ages 19-64 who have not already received the 2017-2018 flu vaccine. Females able to become pregnant must be willing to use a medically accepted contraceptive method from 30 days before first vaccination until 60 days after the last study vaccination. Participation will last approximately 13 months with up to 8 scheduled clinic visits and 2-7 phone calls depending on which group you are randomized into. Other inclusion criteria applies. Recent studies have shown that a new vaginal ring containing a drug called Dapivirine is effective in protecting against HIV infection. A new study at UAB is looking at comparing this vaginal ring to two others, containing the same drug at higher doses. The study involves 10 clinic visits over a period of about 3 months. During this time, you will be randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatment groups and will be asked to wear a vaginal ring for a period of about 3 months. In order to participate, you must be on birth control for the entire duration of the study. This study is to determine if a low carbohydrate or a low fat diet is better for helping adults with a spinal cord injury: 1) stick to their diet, 2) improve their body composition, and 3) lower their cardiometabolic risk factors (such as diabetes, heart disease, or stroke). Participation includes 2 visits to Lakeshore Foundation over six months to complete a series of assessments, including blood work, fitness measures and body measurements. If you enroll in the study, you will receive a diet and exercise plan, and you will work with a health coach for 6 months to follow your plan. You will also be given access to an on-line health coaching program called POWERS for 6 months. You will receive $50 for completing the initial assessments and another $50 when you finish the 6 month assessments. Researchers at UAB are looking for men ages 18-45 to take part in a new research study. The purpose of the study is to test the safety and acceptability of a new rectal gel, which is being developed to protect against HIV infection during anal sex. If you are HIV negative and have had anal sex at least once in the past year, you may be eligible to participate. The study involves 16 visits over a period of about 6 weeks. During this time, you will insert the gel, rectally, a total of 8 times. Rectal biopsies will be collected at 5 of the visits. Study subjects are being sought to help identify the risk factors involved in kidney stone formation. You don’t have to have kidney stones to participate. You cannot enroll in this study if you have been diagnosed with diabetes. Participants must be ages 19-65 and in relatively good health. What you will be required to do: 1. We are looking for participants who have been diagnosed with “Fatty Liver Disease” and who are NOT diabetic. We are also looking for healthy individuals with a history of kidney stone formation with a BMI between 20-40. All visits will occur at UAB and participants will be required to consume meals for three days that are prepared by trained UAB dietary staff. The meals are provided at no cost to participants and may be consumed at your location of choice. This study will also involve collecting your urine for two consecutive days. This study will examine predictors of successful aging outcomes among adults and older adults with and without HIV. The UAB Neuroinflammation, Pain and Fatigue Lab is looking for individuals to take part in a research study. We will induce a temporary immune response and test how this affects fibromyalgia symptoms and markers of immune activity. You will be asked to come in for a screening session and, if eligible, two experimental sessions. You will be compensated up to $1025. Participants must have fibromyalgia, not be pregnant or currently planning to become pregnant, be without any significant medical conditions such as heart disease, and not currently using opioid medications. Seeking healthy participants with no history or diagnosis of mental illness personally or in a first-degree relative — mom, dad, sibling. You must not require medication to treat an existing physical or mental illness/disorder. Individuals abusing alcohol or recreational drugs cannot participate as there will be intensive drug screening — both urine and blood. You must be ages 18-55 and weigh less than 190 lbs. Participants are needed to evaluate the effect of a drug called LY2150023 (Pomaglumetad or "POMA" for short) on a naturally occurring chemical called glutamate in the brain. We will also ask you to receive an intravenous infusion of a drug called ketamine. Study requirements: Screening (visit 1): determine your eligibility for the study, about 2 hours and includes drug testing, a complete medical and neurological check-up; Screening Ketamine MRI (visit 2): drug testing, MRI scan and ketamine infusion to determine study eligibility; Study Day 1 (visit 3): take study medicine in clinic, clinic evaluation, blood draw about 2 hours; Study Day 5 (visit 4): Clinical evaluation, blood draw and checkup about 2 hours; Study 10 (visit 5): Clinical evaluation, blood draw, drug testing, MRI scan and ketamine infusion about 5-6 hours. You may qualify to participate in a national research study to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the shingles vaccine (Zostavax®). Are you at least 50 years old? Are you taking Remicade, Enbrel, Humira, Cimzia or Simponi? If yes, and if you have never received the shingles vaccine, you may qualify. The duration of the study is 6 months. Participants will be compensated. Zostavax ® is an approved vaccine for people ages 50 and older and has been shown to be very effective to prevent zoster (shingles) and related complications. However it has NOT been studied in patients who are taking Remicade, Enbrel, Humira, Cimzia or Simponi. The Varicella zostER VaccinE Study (VERVE) has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). UAB is coordinating the VERVE study. We invite families with children ages 7 or 8 years old to participate. The study involves up to 31 visits to the UAB Youth Safety Lab. Parents respond to questionnaires and children engage in a state of the art virtual pedestrian environment and complete various other tasks and activities. Families will earn up to $600 for their participation, including $100 for each 2-hour visit and $25 for each 30-minute training session. Parking is provided. Children receive a toy at each visit. We are looking for African-American young adults ages 18-25 who live in Birmingham to participate in an entertainment education study. Participation in the project requires completing 3 in-person interviews (1.5-2 hours each), watching short videos featuring local rappers and hip hop artists, and referring your friends to the study. Interviews include a survey about various health behaviors and attitudes. You will also be asked to provide an overview of your recent sexual activity. Mental exercises may help some people think faster and better. This study seeks to examine whether the amount of such mental exercises can help people think better. The UAB Division of Rheumatology and Immunology is conducting a study to research the effects of Rheumatoid Arthritis on muscle strength and insulin. To qualify, you must be between the ages of 35 and 65, not be diagnosed with diabetes or any other illness that may impair evaluation of study outcomes, and do not engage in a strength training program or vigorous exercise. All participants will be required to come to UAB for testing on 3 or more occasions and qualified RA participants will receive a 15-week regimen of the study drug. Are you a breast cancer survivor having difficulty walking? Do you have any lower-body pain that is restricting your mobility? If so, you may be interested in taking part in an exercise training intervention. UAB researchers are looking for overweight women  - age 18-70 with a body mass index between 30-45 kg/m2 - with a history of breast cancer to participate in a novel exercise training study. Volunteers will be asked to attend two assessment sessions: an initial assessment and after 8 weeks of exercise to collect information about your health status. Further eligibility screening will be conducted by telephone. Volunteers must reside in or near Jefferson County. The study will evaluate a novel exercise training strategy designed to mimic exercise at higher altitude to support improved health and mobility among breast cancer survivors. Contact Dr. Stephen J. Then you and your baby may be eligible to participate in a study to measure the nutrients and hormones in your breast milk and look at whether they influence your baby’s feeding behaviors and growth. To be eligible, you must be at least 18 years of age, and have a healthy baby that is less than 4 weeks old and being fed ONLY breast milk (no formula or cereal). For this study, you will be asked to come to UAB with your baby for 2-3 study visits. You will be compensated for your time. The UAB Neuroinflammation, Pain and Fatigue Lab is looking for individuals to take a low dose of naltrexone or a placebo for 6 months. Every participant will receive the drug at some point during the study. You will be asked to come in for a screening session; to complete a daily symptom questionnaire and to provide blood samples during the 6-month period. If eligible, you will be compensated up to $425. Participants must: Have moderate to severe chronic fatigue (for at least 12 months); Not be pregnant or currently planning to become pregnant; Be without any significant medical conditions such as heart disease; and Not currently using opioid medications. Researchers at UAB are conducting an exciting study in adolescents to investigate how diet quality influences body composition, quality of life, and other outcomes related to fatty liver disease. We are currently seeking individuals diagnosed with spinal cord injury (SCI) for a research study evaluating diet. The purpose of this study is to determine if a low carb or low fat diet is better for helping adults with SCI: 1) stick to their diet, 2) improve their body composition, and 3) lower their cardiometabolic risk factors (such as diabetes, heart disease, or stroke). We are currently seeking cardiac surgical patients to participate in the LEVO-CTS research study. The purpose of the study is to evaluate an investigational drug with the potential to improve outcomes in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass and/or heart valve surgery. Minimum eligibility requirements: Must be 18 years or older, your physician has diagnosed you with coronary vessel disease requiring bypass surgery and/or the need for heart valve surgery. In our study of patients with resistant hypertension, we have shown that vascular function improves with the use of spironolactone, a mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist. Spironolactone has also been shown to reduce urinary protein loss in patients with chronic kidney disease. We are looking for men and women, ages 19-65, with Stage III CKD, non-diabetic or who have controlled diabetes, and who are not currently taking spironolactone or amiloride.
