Joseph LovettoJoseph Lovetto, systems analyst lead in the School of Dentistry’s Health Information and Business Systems group, is being celebrated for 50 years of service to UAB in 2026.The UAB School of Dentistry touches patients across Alabama and around the world, training the majority of the state’s dentists and reaching practitioners across the globe through its leadership in dental research. In turn, the work done by Joseph Lovetto, systems analyst lead in its Health Information and Business Systems group, touches nearly every corner of the school, colleagues say.

At a reception on March 30, UAB will celebrate Lovetto for his 50 years of service to the school and the university community during the annual service awards celebration. In honor of that milestone, Information Systems Manager II Matt Chumley, Lovetto’s supervisor, shared this perspective on what Lovetto means to the School of Dentistry:

For five decades, Joe has been an essential part of the university and the School of Dentistry, contributing a depth of knowledge and continuity that few institutions are fortunate enough to experience. His work touches nearly every corner of the school — faculty, staff and students alike rely on his expertise, steady presence and unwavering commitment to excellence. Over the years, he has been a trusted resource and a familiar face, someone who understands not only the processes and technical systems that keep the school running, but also the people who make up its community.

As the school’s subject matter expert for clinical back-office technologies, he plays a critical role in supporting finance, clinical operations and student assessment. His mastery of the electronic dental record system ensures that clinical workflows remain accurate, efficient and compliant. Whether he is making essential updates, troubleshooting complex issues, or documenting and reporting unsolvable problems to software vendors, he approaches every task with precision and a deep sense of responsibility.

His contributions extend far beyond daytoday operations. He supports dental student clinical rotations, provides data extracts for research across the university and medical center, and produces the statistical reports required annually for accreditation. The reports he builds and manages for student assessment play a vital role in evaluating academic progress and ensuring the school continues to meet the highest educational standards. His work strengthens not only the school’s internal processes, but also its reputation for academic rigor and clinical excellence.

Reaching 50 years of service is a rare and remarkable achievement. Joe’s dedication, institutional knowledge and quiet leadership have shaped the School of Dentistry in ways that will endure long after this milestone. His legacy is woven into the systems, the programs and the people he has supported for half a century, which is a testament to a career defined by integrity, expertise and an unwavering commitment to the university’s mission.

Lovetto is one of 314 employees with 20 or more years of service who will be honored at the 2026 Service Awards reception March 30. See a full list of all honorees.
