You may be eligible to participate in a research study led by UAB Pediatrics. Babies typically receive four doses of the pneumococcal vaccine at 2, 4, 6, and about 12 months of age to help protect against infections such as ear infections, sinus infections, pneumonia, bacteremia (blood infection), and meningitis. This study is designed to learn more about an updated version of the pneumococcal vaccine that covers additional types of pneumococcal bacteria. We’re looking for children ages 8–10 with reading disorders (like dyslexia) and their caregivers to join a research study. The study tests Engage — a fun video game designed to improve focus and reading skills — all from home using Zoom. The UAB Office of Psychiatric Research is actively recruiting participants for an Adolescent Depression Study and wants to connect with you on our research! Whether you are needing someone to talk to, or even have no history of mental health conditions and are just wanting to further knowledge within the medical and mental health field, we would love to get you involved! Our Adolescent Study is a Non-Treatment Study. Our Non-Treatment Studies do NOT involve testing a new medication or intervention. BrainREAD is recruiting children, ages 7-13, with reading comprehension difficulties. This study includes a free reading intervention through Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes. We are also recruiting children with no reading difficulties to participate. Participation involves a pre and post session which are broken up into two days each. Day 1 consist of paper and pencil evaluations and Day 2 consists of an MRI scan. Participants can be compensated up to $250 for both testing sessions. We are conducting a research study to find out if a new contact lens can treat nearsightedness in children.  You can be a part of this study if your child Is 8 to less than 13 years old Needs glasses or contact lenses to see well at far objects Is willing to wear contact lenses The study includes 6 visits over a year, and your child will receive eye examinations, contact lenses, lens fitting, and lens prescription at no cost. Type 2 diabetes is diagnosed when the body has problems with high blood sugar levels. This can lead to serious health problems if not identified and treated early. Our research team is currently conducting an exercise training study in children and adolescents with cerebral palsy who can walk. You must be 11 - 21 years old. You will be asked to walk, jump, step, and do exercises. Eligible participants will have multiple visits and can be compensated up to $430 depending on your tests. The UAB Department of Psychiatry is recruiting healthy adolescent participants for a clinical research study. The study will compare healthy adolescents and adolescents with functional seizures (FS). To participate in this research, you must:- be 11 to 18 years old- have no diagnosed medical conditions- have a parent/guardian available to participate in lab visitsIf you choose to participate in the study, you will be part of the healthy control group. If you are currently pregnant, 18 or older, planning to deliver at UAB, and planning to breast feed, you may be eligible for our study!This study focuses on better understanding breast milk composition, the presence or absence of CMV in breast milk, and its possible transmission to babies. CMV is a common virus that most people in the US are infected with by adulthood. Participants will meet with study staff once a month for six months to collect non-invasive samples and answer a questionnaire. Samples collected include oral swabs from you and your baby, a small quantity of breast milk and a skin swab from you, as well as a urine and stool sample from your baby. Participants will be compensated up to $300 for completing the study visits and providing samples. The Cognition, Brain, & Autism Lab is recruiting participants for a research study on reading comprehension at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. This study observes how children’s brains respond when they read and understand words and sentences, using a series of paper-pencil tests and a type of scan called functional magnetic resonance imaging also known as fMRI. We are recruiting children and adolescents between the ages of 7-13 diagnosed with high-functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder, children with reading comprehension difficulties, and typically developing children. Your child may be eligible for a free language intervention. Participants must be native English speakers and right-handed. Participants cannot be claustrophobic or have braces. The School of Health Professions department of physical therapy is conducting a research study on muscle development in the legs of children. Strength test will be performed, such as jumping and running, and bone density will be tested through ultrasound. All testing is free. Participants will be compensated up to $50, and parking will be covered. If your child can walk or run without the aid of an assistive device and did not suffer a fracture in the past year, your child may qualify. The total time commitment is approximately 4 hours spread over 2 days separated by a minimum of 5 days. The Child and Adolescent Health Lab at UAB is conducting a research study to understand parental reactions to a child’s sexual identity disclosure. Participants will complete surveys as well as an interview. Participants will be compensated for participation.
