Participate in the PRISM-BP research study at UAB, investigating whether sharing personalized genetic risk scores can help people better control blood pressure. In this study, participants will attend 7 visits over 12 months. The study involves health checks, blood tests, urine samples, activity tracking, and wearing a 24-hour blood pressure monitor. Some participants will also receive their genetic risk score with counseling. Eligible participants must be 18–55 years old, have high blood pressure, and have no history of serious heart or kidney problems. Women cannot be pregnant or breastfeeding. You may be eligible to participate in a research study looking at the effects of sacubitril/valsartan on how your body handles sugar. This medication is related to blood pressure and is safe to take with or without hypertension. Eligible participants must be healthy men and women, African American, and have no history of diabetes, heart disease or kidney problems. The study involves performing some exercise, taking sacubitril/valsartan, and collecting blood samples. Participants will be compensated $675 for completing all the visits. The PAVE Study at the UAB Center for Exercise Medicine will examine physical activity levels and heart disease risk in urban and rural older adults. Our study is looking for physically active and inactive postmenopausal women of Black or White race. We are testing the impact of race, exercise habits, and living conditions on heart disease risk in postmenopausal women. Participation only involves two, one-hour long visits to the UAB Center for Exercise Medicine and offers compensation up to $200. Clinical trial evaluating a novel, non-invasive radiation treatment for ventricular tachycardia refractory to medication and catheter ablation The UAB Departments of Radiation Oncology and Cardiology are looking for patients with ventricular tachycardia (VT) not controlled by medications and catheter ablation. The trial will allow patients suffering from VT despite standard of care regimens to undergo non-invasive cardiac radioablation (CRA; a type of stereotactic body radiotherapy) to the area of the heart responsible for their symptoms. Stereotactic body radiotherapy is delivered with a device called the linear accelerator, which is primarily used to treat patients with cancer. UAB is one of the first centers in the U.S. to obtain a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) investigational device exemption for use of the linear accelerator in this capacity on a phase I/II trial. Rural Research Participants Needed FSU College of Nursing invites individuals with heart failure and their care partners who live in rural areas to participate in a research project under the direction of Lucinda J. Graven, Ph.D., APRN. Care teams will partner with a registered nurse to manage daily challenges related to heart failure self-care by telephone. If you are 18 years of age or older and currently taking the blood thinners Xarelto (rivaroxaban) or Eliquis (apixaban), you may be eligible to participate in a research study. This study is being done to determine how your kidney function affects how you metabolize Xarelto or Eliquis. The study involves keeping a medication log for one week and one (12 hour) visit to UAB where we will collect blood samples at different times during the day.
