Microbiology Professor David M. Bedwell, Ph.D., will receive the Karlin Henze Memorial Award from the Gregory Fleming James Cystic Fibrosis Research Center at UAB during a special ceremony Aug. 22. The award honors Karlin Henze, a research assistant at the center until her death from cystic fibrosis in February 1999.

Center Director Eric Sorscher, M.D., noted that Bedwell and his laboratory have been international leaders in cystic fibrosis research. “Dr. Bedwell has made outstanding contributions to our understanding of cystic fibrosis. He has dedicated nearly 20 years of service at UAB to studying premature stop-mutation in the CFTR gene to help advance therapeutic treatment. He is an outstanding scientist, a wonderful mentor and a great asset to our university.”

Henze, a native of Huntsville, began working at the CF Center in 1990, following her graduation from the University of Alabama at Huntsville. She underwent a double lung transplant in 1995 at the University of North Carolina, but returned to her work at UAB until her death in 1999 at age 30.
