Faculty member supervising students in a lab.Faculty members with funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) are encouraged to apply for supplemental grants useful for incorporating undergraduate researchers into their projects. Both site Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) and supplemental REUs "aim to provide appropriate and valuable educational experiences for undergraduate students through participation in research." [REU Solicitation NSF 12-569.]

Supplemental REUs are designed to typically support one or two students; however, larger centers or research efforts can request support for a number of students by applying for a REU sites grant. Proposals for supplemental funds supporting a larger number of traditionally underrepresented groups will also be considered.

As a guideline, student stipends for full-time summer work (not including room and board costs) typically average $450 per week. Academic year stipends for part-time work should be pro-rated appropriately. Supplemental proposals can be submitted in one of two ways:

  1. as a supplement to an existing grant or cooperative agreement, or
  2. as part of a new research proposal.

Funds for involving students in Evaluative Research Experiences are also encouraged in the most recent solicitation. Proposal submission dates vary for the various NSF programs, so check with your program officer for additional information on deadlines.
