Inclusion matters. Feeling included helps foster connection and a sense of belonging. We want all students to feel like they belong in the School of Health Professions. One simple way to promote inclusion is by saying the names of your peers correctly. Enter NameCoach!
NameCoach is an easy-to-use application in Canvas that allows students and faculty to record the correct pronunciation of their name. Others in the class can listen to the pronunciation to know how to properly address one another.
NameCoach is now available in Canvas for all School of Health Professions courses. Learn how to record your name and hear the names of people in your classes by watching the short video below.
The mission of the office for Community Engagement is to improve quality of life through reciprocal partnerships in the community.
Goals
- Increase Community Engagement opportunities for staff, faculty, students and community
- Demonstrate a measurable impact in the community
- Grow SHP scholarship in the field of community engagement by promoting and supporting the following:
- Faculty and staff completing the Faculty Fellows in Engaged Learning program
- Students presenting posters at Expo and SHP Research Symposium
- Students and mentors presenting community-based research at local regional, national and international symposia
- Staff leading on and off-campus volunteer effort

Background and Baseline
Definitions
Community Engagement is an umbrella term comprised of the following activities:
Volunteerism – a form of aid or assistance that may have no intentional link to reflection or learning; focuses on the volunteers; may not be regularly scheduled or recurring
Community Service – structured, sustained activities designed to meet human and community needs; focuses on the community served and recipients
Service-Learning – seeks to strike a balance between student learning and community outcomes under the principle that service combined with learning adds value to each and transforms both; based on the assumption that learning does not necessarily occur as a result of experience itself but rather as a result of reflection designed to achieve specific learning outcomes; expand on volunteerism and community service.
Field Education – generally connected to the curriculum; provides benefits to the recipients; intended to primarily benefit the student/provider by enhancing learning in their field of study; may or may not involve reflection
Internship – experiences in which students engage to learn about their area of study and gain practical experience; intended to primarily benefit the student/provider; may or may not be connected to academic courses or involve reflection
* Note: The SHP Academic Affairs Committee (AAC) must review service-learning course proposals as noted in 2.3.1.1 Function of the SHP Faculty Handbook “…proposals requiring review by University committees….”

SHP DEI Art Installation
The UAB School of Health Professions values diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.
Our diverse students, faculty, and staff provide the roots to build a strong foundation of acceptance and respect.
We pledge to grow our understanding of DEI as we strive to positively impact our school and our global community.
A Symbol of Strength and Growth
Commissioned by the UAB School of Health Professions and supported by the SHP DEI Committee, this tree symbolizes our commitment to create a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment.
We chose a tree to signify strength and growth. The tree is made beautiful by the diverse people and ideals of the SHP family.
The trunk of the tree represents our strong foundation of acceptance and respect. The branches of the tree follow their own unique path, just as we do. On the branches are signs of growth, but there is room for more, signifying our continued efforts to understand and exemplify the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Our Message to All
Welcome to the UAB School of Health Professions! We celebrate our differences, which make us stronger; and we value learning from one another, which brings us together. In the SHP family, diversity matters, equity matters, inclusion matters, and you matter.

Kappa Alpha Psi
Kappa Alpha Psi was founded on the campus of Indiana University on January 5, 1911. The Fraternity's fundamental purpose is achievement. Early in this century, African-American students were actively dissuaded from attending college. Formidable obstacles were erected to prevent the few who were enrolled from assimilating into co-curricular campus life. This ostracism characterized Indiana University in 1911, thus causing Elder W. Diggs, Byron K. Armstrong, and eight other black students to form Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, which remains the only Greek letter organization with its 1st Chapter on the University's campus. The founders sought a formula that would immediately raise the sights of black collegians and stimulate them to accomplishments higher than they might have imagined. Fashioning achievement as it's purpose, Kappa Alpha Psi began uniting college men of culture, patriotism and honor in a bond of fraternity.
