UAB Multidisciplinary Partnership Brings 21 Chinese Medical Students to the School of Health Professions
International Education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, in conjunction with the School of Health Professions and INTO UAB hosted 21 medical students from China for a four-week immersion program into U.S. Culture and Medical Education. These students from the Wenzhou Medical University (Zhejiang province, China) graduated from the summer program on Friday, August 10, 2018.

Harold Jones to step down after 17 years as dean of Health Professions
Harold Jones, Ph.D., dean of the School of Health Professions, has announced that he will be stepping down from his role as dean, pending arrival of his successor. Jones became dean of what then was known as the School of Health-Related Professions in April 2001, when it had a total of approximately 800 students. Today, it has more than 2,200 students.

School of Health Professions launches new master’s in health care simulation
The UAB School of Health Professions recently gained approval by the University of Alabama Board of Trustees to launch a new Master of Science in Healthcare Simulation program.
The degree program is designed to prepare students to lead within organizations using simulation to improve quality of care and impact patient outcomes. An entirely online program, students will have the flexibility to complete their degrees while working full time.
“My vision for this program is to develop leaders in the use of simulation to improve the care we provide to our patients,” said Michelle Brown, program director. “There is a growing number of simulation centers throughout the country and we want to help ensure leaders in those centers are prepared to serve a diverse group of students and healthcare professionals.”
Students will receive a strong foundation in simulation as an educational methodology as well as evidence-based quality and patient safety strategies.

UAB MSHI program 1 of only 11 accredited by CAHIIM
The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Master of Science in Health Informatics (MSHI) program is one of only 11 Health Informatics (HI) programs in the U.S. accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). Accreditation through CAHIIM is the highest achievable education and curriculum standard available for MSHI programs.

William W. Featheringill, a key contributor to Birmingham’s ascent as an internationally recognized center for health care, has been honored by one of his former companies with a UAB scholarship in his name.
The William W. Featheringill Scholarship in Health Informatics, established by his daughter Elizabeth Pharo, was endowed by SuccessEHS to honor Featheringill’s legacy as a visionary in health informatics.The endowment will support students in the UAB School of Health Professions’ Master of Science in Health Informatics program. -
Pioneering healthcare leader Biddle is first female to endow scholarship for UAB HSA
Neeysa Biddle, longtime healthcare leader of Ascension and St. Vincent’s Health Services, becomes the first female to endow a scholarship in the UAB School of Health Professions’ Department of Health Services Administration with the establishment of the Neeysa Davis Biddle Endowed Scholarship in Health Administration.
Biddle is a double alumna having earned a B.S. in Allied Health (currently Health Care Management) and an M.S. in Health Administration (MSHA Class 26). -

Ken E. UAB launches academy to increase diversity in health care leadership
University of Alabama at Birmingham launched the UAB Academy for Addressing Health Disparities through Health Care Leadership on May 30, 2017. The two-week program, dedicated to increasing the racial and ethnic diversity of students in graduate level health care management education and leadership, was created by the UAB School of Health Professions’ Department of Health Services Administration with guidance from the UAB Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
