UAB Clinical Doctorate in Post-Professional Occupational Therapy (OTD) Final Project Requirement
The UAB OTD post-professional program is designed to provide in-depth training in specialized areas for experienced occupational therapists. The first students began classes in the fall of 2018 and we celebrated our first graduate in August of 2020. We look forward to celebrating our future graduates as well.

2020 Final Project
As a student completing the Low Vision Rehabilitation Graduate Certificate, the Multitiered Approach to Trauma Graduate Certificate, or the Clinical Doctorate in Occupational Therapy degree (OTD), you qualify to pay in-state online graduate tuition fees regardless of the state or country in which you reside.
Graduate students are charged more tuition than undergraduate students, and tuition rates are calculated per credit hour. For an online 3-credit course, for example, you would be charged the in-state graduate tuition rate multiplied by 3.
The link below takes you to the UAB Tuition & Fees page, which has detailed information for the university’s graduate and undergraduate programs. Click the “Graduate” tab and scroll down to “Online Courses Offered” to view the row with the per-semester-hour cost for School of Health Professions post-professional programs.

Find answers below to some of the questions that we get asked frequently about the Clinical Doctorate in Occupational Therapy (OTD), a post-professional program.
-
I have never taken an online course before - how does it work?
Students log into a passcode protected course site. The site is available at all times to the student. The course content is delivered through use of narrated power point presentations and videos on specific topics. Students participate with classmates and instructors in online discussion boards to analyze cases and discuss course topics and the application to clinical practice.
-
Will I have an additional credential to add to my name when I complete the clinical doctorate?
Yes, the credential UAB will use is OTD.
-
Do I have to enroll in the clinical doctorate program or can I just take a few classes?
It is preferred that you enroll in the clinical doctorate program, but if you would like to take a few classes to see if the online format works for you that is acceptable.
-
How many courses will I have to take in a semester?
You can take 1 or 2 courses, depending on how soon you want to complete your degree. Taking 2 courses a semester means you will finish in about 2 years; 1 course a semester will take 4 years.
-
My degree is from another country; can I be accepted into the clinical doctorate program?
Yes, as long as your degree is from a program accredited by the World Federation of Occupational Therapy (WFOT). You must provide documentation that you graduated from a school with WFOT accreditation. The Graduate School may require confirmation of degree equivalency. A transcript evaluation from World Education Services or Educational Credential Evaluators may be required.
-
I am a COTA. Can I enroll in the graduate certificate?
We are accepting occupational therapy assistants into the program as long as they also have a bachelor’s degree as well as the OTA credential. The focus of the BS degree can be in another field.
-
Can I sit for the NBCOT examination if I am a COTA and complete this degree?
No – this is a post-professional degree and does not have the elements you would need that are included in an entry level OTD or master’s program.
-
How do I combine the low vision certificate with the post-professional clinical doctorate program?
To combine the programs, you must submit the required documents and be accepted into EACH program separately. If you are already enrolled in the certificate program, or if you completed it in the last five years then your coursework will apply to the clinical doctorate.
-
Can I take coursework for the certificate and the clinical doctorate degree at the same time?
Yes, you can take coursework for both programs concurrently depending on your schedule.
-
If I decide to complete the clinical doctorate degree after I have started the low vision certificate program, can I still enroll in the clinical doctorate program?
Yes, you can still enroll in the OTD program after you have started the low vision certificate program, and the credit hours completed in the certificate program will apply toward the clinical doctorate degree. However, please note that credits must be applied within 5 years of your completion of the certificate program and must meet the graduate school requirements for the clinical doctorate program. Students must complete applications for both programs and pay the application fee through the UAB Graduate School for the clinical doctorate program even if they have already been accepted into the low vision certificate program.

Transfer of Credit Policy
The Department of Occupational Therapy adheres to the credit transfer policy established by the UAB Graduate School. This policy is quoted below, and you can also review it and other information about academic progress on this UAB Graduate School webpage.
"Previously earned graduate credit with a grade of B or above while enrolled at another regionally accredited graduate school may be eligible for transfer into the student’s current degree program if it has not been applied toward another degree (either at UAB or elsewhere). In addition, credit may be awarded for non-collegiate courses in accordance with American Council on Education recommendations and approval of the appropriate department chair and dean. All transfer credit requests must be initiated by the student and require the approval of the graduate program director and the Graduate School. Transfer of Credit forms are available online at uab.edu/graduate/online-forms."
“Completion of this form does not guarantee that the transfer credit will be granted. No more than 12 semester hours of graduate credit can be transferred to UAB. Students wishing to request an exception to the transfer credit hour limit must receive the approval of the program director, department chair, and Graduate School Dean. Once transfer credit has been approved, it will be included in the calculation of the grade point average in the student's current UAB program."
“In programs offered jointly by UAB and other universities, all graduate credits earned in the program at a cooperating university are eligible for transfer to UAB. If a student earns credit in one UAB graduate program and is later admitted to another program, unused credits from the previous program, if applicable, are eligible for consideration for transfer into the current program.”
In keeping with this university’s policy, requests for transfer of credit from another program will be considered on an individual basis.
How to request transfer of credit
Step 1: Submit your request to the program director and the department chair. Each course/credential/certification submitted for review will be evaluated for equivalence by the program director and relevant course instructor(s). You must provide the syllabi for the course under consideration for credit transfer for an equivalency review, and a competency test may be administered at the program director’s discretion. Those requesting course credit for certifications such as the American Occupational Therapy Association’s board and specialty certifications must submit proof of certification and certification criteria.
Step 2: Once you have received approval from the program director for the transfer of credit, you must fill out this transfer request form for approval from the UAB Graduate School.
