UAB Tone Your Bones

Miacalcin is a form of calcitonin which is a hormone that we produce in the body.     Calcitonin slows down our bone losses so that our own bone building can get caught up and even increase bone density.

Pros:

  • Miacalcin is fairly easy to take - a dose is one spray in one nostril per day (switch nostrils each day).
  • Miacalcin can increase bone density in the spine and lower your chances of   breaking a bone in the spine.
  • If you are having pain in the spine caused by fractures, Miacalcin may help lower your pain.

Cons:

  • Miacalcin does not seem to increase the bone density in the hip or lower your chances of breaking a hip.
  • Miacalcin does not seem to increase the bone density in the spine as well as other medications.
  • Miacalcin can cause soreness on the inside of the nose (the nasal passages).
