Interpersonal Violence

Interpersonal Violence

"One in five college women report having experienced domestic violence from a current partner. Twenty-seven percent of women and seven percent of men report having experienced sexual assault in college. Contrary to media depictions of sexual assault, 90% of cases involve someone the survivor already knows. We provide health education to students on topics related to interpersonal violence prevention, including sexual violence, relationship violence, stalking. We also promote healthy behaviors such as setting healthy boundaries and modeling bystander intervention. While we do provide programming on this subject, we are not a confidential resource for students experiencing interpersonal violence. Please contact Student Counseling Services ,the Title IX Office or UAB Police if you are experiencing interpersonal violence or feel you are in danger. You may also find resources here if you are in crisis or emergency."

Substance Misuse Prevention

Substance Misuse Prevention

It is common to assume that college students drink in high-risk ways and experiment with substances. According to our student health data, we know that about one-third of UAB students have never consumed alcohol. Of the two-thirds of students who do drink, many of those students drink in low-risk ways. We provide health education focused on supporting students who abstain and help students who choose to consume alcohol develop skills that reduce likelihood of harm. We also know that most UAB students have never used, or currently do not use, tobacco products or other drugs. We recognize that vaping is a growing epidemic on most college campuses and aim to provide the latest information regarding this addictive practice.
UAB offers students free anonymous online personalized self-assessments for alcohol and cannabis use. You can assess your alcohol consumption patterns through our Alcohol eCHECKUP TO GO self-assessment and your cannabis consumption patterns through our Marijuana eCHECKUP TO GOself-assessment.

Self-Care

Self-Care

For many students, college is the first time away from home. Understandably, college life comes with its own unique stressors. Stress can come in many forms, from academic stress to economic stress to social and identity stress. Many students find themselves underprepared for the stressors of college life and may need guidance on how to navigate this new environment. We help students develop the skills necessary to thrive in college and maintain their sense of wellbeing and provide health education on the topics of stress management, sleep hygiene, and other dimensions of self-care.

Peer Education

Peer Education

Peer education is an effective tool for health education. Peers have a great amount of influence over each other and can positively influence the campus culture. Peer to peer conversations are more effective because students are more comfortable having honest conversations with each other about personal topics, like interpersonal violence, substance use, and self-care.
