Graduate Reseach Assistants (GRA)

  • Conduct original, professional-level research in their field of study primarily for the purpose of fulfilling the requirements for an advanced degree.
  • Yes; are in an educational relationship with UAB
  • Monthly
  • Eligible for tuition remission
  • Must provide funds as compensation, either via one-time payements or added into stipend

Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTA)

  • Directly involved in classroom or laboratory instruction primarily for the purpose of fulfilling the requirements of an advanced degree.
  • Yes; are in an educational relationship with UAB
  • Monthly
  • Eligible for tuition scholarships
  • Paid via tuition scholarship

Graduate Assistant (GA)

  • Are not performing supervised research or teaching, and are therefore considered to be student employees
  • No
  • Paid bi-weekly for hours worked; must report hours worked in KRONOS and complete a TEL doc
  • Eligible for tuition scholarships
  • Paid via tuition scholarship

Graduate Student Trainee

  • Perform original, professional-level reseach fully supported by a fellowship, training grant, or institutional sources and are not considered to be UAB employees.  No past, present, or future services are required as a condition of receiving this appointment.
  • Have never been considered employees; no changes
  • Monthly
  • Eligible for tuition scholarships
  • Paid via tuition scholarship
