When Department of Medicine Chair Dr. Seth Landefeld came to UAB in September of 2012, he remembers being immediately impressed with the warm welcome. “The people were just extraordinary.” Ten years later, he still thinks the people are what makes UAB exceptional and notes how much we have done together.

 

More Good News for October 28, 2022

We have trained over 500 residents and fellows, taught over 1,000 medical students, and cared for more than 1 million patients. We’ve made exciting discoveries that will change the lives of those living with disease and nearly doubled NIH funding to more than $100 million. We’ve also cared for each other in ways we never dreamed would be necessary as we faced a pandemic that challenged every aspect of our medical enterprise.
     Now that we are beyond the worst of the pandemic, Landefeld says he remains confident of one thing. UAB’s generous, dedicated, talented people will thrive for decades to come.

The Department continues its 2022 Faculty Honors by highlighting the outstanding clinician-educators whose leadership and extraordinary dedication aid the next generation of physicians and scientists. Thank you all for your service!

Heersink residents and former trainees visited Meharry Medical College's residency fair to foster recruitment of diverse applicants to UAB’s residency training programs and introduce the students to our graduate training environment.

Tom McElderry, M.D., (Associate Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) explains how technology such as smartwatches, ablations and other advanced medical procedures have changed physicians' approach to treating atrial fibrillation.

Kirk Russ, M.D., (Assistant Professor, Gastroenterology and Hepatology) and Daniel Chu, M.D., (Associate Professor, Surgery) join UAB MedCast to discuss the trends, diagnosis, and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease.

Shajan Peter, MBBS, (Associate Professor, Gastroenterology and Hepatology) and the Kirklin Clinic Endoscopy team have performed over 10,000 endoscopy procedures with anesthesia since launching the service a year ago.

The DOM is thrilled to welcome Assistant Professor Steven Fox, M.D., to the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine. His interests include global access to quality care, improving point-of-care ultrasound, and graduate medical education. He will see patients in TKC. Welcome, Dr. Fox!
