Patient Care Kudos go to Spencer Idstein, MD (R-4) for his proactive work to transition an 18- year-old male patient with cerebral palsy from the pediatric primary care clinic to IM4. 

S. Lou Bridges, Jr., MD, PhD, and Chander Raman, PhD (Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology) have received a $1.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense for their project “The Role of the Interferon-Gamma-Jak/STAT Pathway in Rheumatoid Arthritis.”

R. J. Blackburn, MD (Chief Medical Resident) has received the American College of Physicians’ Waxman Scholarship. As one of six recipients of this award, he will teach the “Ultrasound-Guided Central Venous Line Placement” workshop at the upcoming ACP meeting in May. 

Gareth R. Dutton, PhD (Preventive Medicine) just received an RO1 grant from the NIDDK to study a weight management intervention delivered by peer coaches. The project it entitled “Primary Care Obesity Management in the Southeast: PROMISE.”

Fellows Pankaj Arora, MD, and Navkaranbir Bajaj, MD (Cardiovascular Disease) gave two oral presentations and two poster presentations at the 2016 American College of Cardiology Scientific Sessions in Chicago. 

Surya Bhatt, MD (Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine) been chosen by the ATS Assembly on Clinical Problems to receive the Early Career Achievement Award.

The UAB Minority Health & Health Disparities Research Center will host the 11th annual UAB Health Disparities Research Symposium on Thursday, April 21, 2016 at the DoubleTree by Hilton. Eliseo J. Pérez-Stable, MD, director of the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities at the National Institutes of Health, and Leonard Jack Jr., PhD, director of the Division of Community Health within the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, will present keynotes.
