The 2015 Department of Medicine Holiday Party was an evening to remember. We kicked off by celebrating the establishment of the Carl E. Dukes, MD, Minority Residency Pipeline Endowed Support Fund. Then we turned our attention to dining and dancing in the spirit of the season. Thanks to all who made the occasion merry and bright!

Kudos to Sean Dunn, MD (PGY-2) who was recognized for outstanding patient care and teamwork at the VA-ICU. The on-call resident had four acute admissions simultaneously; Sean stepped up to help. He provided care for a patient with a hemorrhagic stroke, went with the patient to radiology for his CT, and had the patient emergently transferred to UAB neuro-ICU for the care the patient needed. The Department salutes him for true professionalism, advocacy, and dedication to his patient and his team.

William M. Geisler, MD, MPH (Infectious Diseases) has been elected to The American Society for Clinical Investigation.

Victor J. Thannickal, MD (Director, Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care) received the 2016 Recognition Award for Scientific Accomplishments from the American Thoracic Society.

Faculty in the Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology—Jasvinder Singh, MD (PI), S. Louis Bridges, MD, PhD (Division Director) and Ken Saag, MD—led a multicenter team to write new guidelines for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. The guidelines were commissioned and are published by the American College of Rheumatology. Read the UAB news story here

Camille Macé, PhD (Nephrology) was recently awarded an American Heart Association Scientist Development Grant for her project entitled “Molecular Mechanisms of Non-HIV Collapsing Glomerulopathy.”

Stan Massie, MD (General Internal Medicine) completed a one-year term as the President of the Directors of Clinical Skills Courses, a national organization dedicated to building a cohesive and productive national consortium of educators who direct clinical skills courses for medical students. During his term, the organization grew to over 400 registered members representing over 90% of medical schools in the U.S.

Congratulations to General Internal Medicine physicians Stuart Cohen, MD, who was recently promoted to Professor, and Ben Taylor, MD, who was promoted to Associate Professor.

G.M. Anantharamaiah, PhD (Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care) was keynote speaker at the recent Lipids 2015 Conference presenting a talk entitled “Apolipoprotein E Mimetic: From Theory to Therapy.”

According to the 2015 edition of the Best Doctors in America, 391 UAB physicians in 38 specialties listed are among the top five percent of clinicians in the United States, as voted by their peers. The Department of Medicine is home to over 100 of these fine physicians!

More than a dozen Department of Medicine faculty and staff members recently visited the YWCA to help get ready for a special holiday community outreach. These two hours of service were filled with hot glue, reindeer games, and lots of fun and toys in preparation for Santa’s Workshop, a day of holiday crafts and cheer for families in the YWCA’s domestic violence program.

Our Chief Medical Residents and Department Chair were recently featured in the Campaign for UAB annual fund drive. “When you give to residency and fellowship programs at UAB, tomorrow’s best physicians see loyalty in action: to the place where you began to make your mark on the world…to the people who helped shape your dreams…and to the promise you deliver on every day as one of more than 120,000 UAB alumni around the world.
