The Department salutes Bruno Pereira, MD (PGY-2) who demonstrated exceptional empathy and caring on his recent CCU rotation. His active listening encouraged his patients and their families, and his respect for the nursing staff won their admiration. Kudos, Dr. Pereira!

J. Edwin Blalock, PhD (Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care) was awarded the second renewal of his longest-running RO1 grant entitled "A New Pathway of Neutrophilic Inflamation,” making him the sole investigator in the Department with four RO1 grants.

Jessica Merlin, MD (Infectious Diseases) is lead editor for the book "HIV and Chronic Pain: A Practical Approach," available now electronically and next month in print.

Mona Fouad, MD, MPH (Director, Preventive Medicine) has been selected for inclusion in the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s annual review of progress against cancer and emerging trends. Her study, “Patient navigation as a model to increase minority participation in cancer clinical trials,” examines the use of navigators for informing and enrolling  African-American patients in clinical trials. Kimberly Robinson (Preventive Medicine) recently received the “SHE GOT IT DONE” award from the UAB Women’s Club. The award recognizes Kym’s tremendous compassion, humility, and devotion as a patient navigator who guides cancer patients through the complicated healthcare system to help them get the care they need.

Nancy Masucci (Administrator for General Internal Medicine and Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care) has been elected to the Administrators in Internal Medicine Council. 

Rodney Tucker, MD, MMM (Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care) was appointed the inaugural holder of the Christine S. Ritchie, MD, Endowed Chair in Palliative Care Leadership by the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees in February. 

The Department is thrilled to report a $10.25 million charitable gift that will establish the Southeast Institute for Innovation in Palliative and Supportive Care at UAB. The Institute will focus on education and training opportunities for healthcare professionals as well as research initiatives to better understand the unique needs of seriously ill patients and their families.
