DOM Employees of the Month:
  • June 2015 was Nicole Temple (Hematology and Oncology). As a Business Officer in the Division, Nicole is responsible for a variety of financial, human resources, and administrative duties. She is always willing to tackle new tasks and responsibilities with a natural inclination toward problem solving. Nicole is also committed to service. She was the Chair of the original DOM Employee of the Month Selection Committee during the inaugural year of the program in 2012-13.
  • July 2015 is Debbie Frazer (Hematology and Oncology). Debbie has over 31 years of service in the Division. As a Medical Social Worker, she assesses patient needs, anticipates problems and initiates programs to assist both patients and their families. Her colleagues admire her dedication to her patients and report that Debbie owns the UAB Core Value “Do Right.”

The Department of Medicine proudly welcomed 48 new fellows at a special reception on July 15.

Bruce Julian, MD (Nephrology) and the IgA Nephropathy Research Team recently received a major philanthropic gift from the IGA Nephropathy Foundation of America. The donation is the result of a longstanding and productive partnership between the Foundation and UAB.

Steven Rowe, MD (Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine) has been named director of the Gregory Fleming James Cystic Fibrosis Research Center in the UAB School of Medicine, effective August 1. Rowe specializes in the care of adolescent CF patients, and he helped found the CF Transition Clinic, a collaborative project between the adult and pediatric CF care centers. Racquel Innis-Shelton, MD (Hematology and Oncology) participated in the first African-American Bone Marrow Awareness Month Twitter Chat, along with her colleagues Sandra Rudolph, RN, MSN, and Patricia Lyons, RN. The social media event was designed to encourage African-Americans, who have poor outcomes in sickle cell anemia, leukemia, and lymphoma, to join the Bone Marrow Registry. The hour-long session generated over 15,000 impressions.

Tiffany Carson, PhD, MPH (Preventive Medicine) has been elected as the new Secretary/Treasurer for The Obesity Society (TOS) Bio-Behavioral Research Section. TOS is the leading scientific society dedicated to the study of obesity. After a year of serving in this role, she will rotate to Chair-Elect next year, and ultimately to Chair in 2017-2018.

Ravi Bhatia, MD (Director, Hematology and Oncology) has been selected as a member of the Medical and Scientific Advisory Board for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the major voluntary health organization dedicated to funding research, finding cures and ensuring access to treatments for blood cancer patients.

Eric Judd, MD (Nephrology) was awarded a 5-year NIDDK K23 award for his project titled "Vascular effects of mineralocorticoid receptor antagonism in kidney disease.” David Calhoun is his primary mentor.
