We are proud of the research presented by Department of Medicine trainees at last week’s annual Trainee Research Symposium.  The top winners (below) will present their research at the next DOM Clinical Research Seminar at noon on March 28 in WP-E.

  • Evida Dennis (Gastroenterology & Hepatology) won the Samuel B. Barker Award for Excellence in Research by a Graduate Student. Her mentor is Phillip Smith, MD.  
  • Ross Farris, MD (PGY-2) won the Thomas N. James Award for Excellence in Research by a Resident. His mentor is Harish Doppalapudi, MD.
  • Anand Iyer, MD (Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine/UAB Health Services, Outcomes, and Effectiveness Research Training Program) won the J. Claude Bennett Award Award for Excellence by an Associate Fellow. His mentor is Mark Dransfield, MD.  
  • Lillian Seu, PhD (Infectious Diseases) won the Joseph Reeves Award for Excellence in Research by a Post-doctoral Scholar. Her mentor is Paul Goepfert, MD.  

Three PGY-2 internal medicine residents—Karen Rhea, MD, Emily Nance, MD, and Katie Chitwood, MD—were selected by the Southeast Center of Excellence in Geriatric Medicine to participate in the 13th Annual SCEGM Resident Award Summit.

UAB recently recognized four DOM faculty members for their years of service to the University, their patients, and the community at the annual UAB Service Awards Luncheon: 

  • 20 Years. Mel Wilcox, MD (Director, Gastroenterology and Hepatology)
  • 25 Years. Robert Gaston, MD (Nephrology)
  • 30 Years. Paul Sanders, MD (Nephrology)
  • 45 Years. Ferdinand Urthaler, MD (Cardiovascular Disease)

(Vice Chair for Education) has been elected to the Council of the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine.

Sara J. Knight, PhD (Preventive Medicine) has received Top Reviewer recognition from Annals of Internal Medicine. 

Nominations are now open for the 2016 Dean’s Excellence Awards. Two awards—one to a junior faculty member and the other to a senior faculty member—will be given in each of five areas: service, teaching, research, diversity enhancement and mentorship.
