Thanks to Kelly Hyndman, PhD (Nephrology) and the team in Cardio-Renal Physiology and Medicine, Translational Research Immersion Modules for our interns were successfully piloted this year, giving 44 residents a chance to pipette, measure rat urine sodium, count macrophages, observe mouse surgery, and more. After the experience, a majority reported a greater appreciation of the value of basic science to clinicians. 


Lufang Zhou, PhD (Cardiovascular Disease) has received an R21 grant from the NHLBI to explore ways to use visible light to control mitochondria in an attempt to learn more about their role in common diseases. Co-investigators are Victor Darley-Usmar, PhD (Pathology) and Xiaoguang “Margaret” Liu, PhD (UA Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering).

The Department welcomes Beatriz Hanaoka, MD (Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology) to UAB. Our newest physician-investigator is a Brazil native who trained at Columbia University and Cleveland Clinic. She recently received a K23 grant from the NIH to study “Skeletal Muscle in Rheumatoid Arthritis.”  

Gabrielle Rocque, MD (Hematology and Oncology) was published in The Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. Her study reports an 88% participation rate in screenings to uncover cancer patients’ distress symptoms when lay navigators perform the assessments.

2016 Update in Rheumatology for Primary Care will be held at May 20 -21, 2016. This is a continuing medical education course, designed for internists, family practitioners, and health care professionals involved in the care of patients with rheumatic diseases.

Coming next week to Medical Grand Rounds: Michael Mugavero, MD, MHSc, UAB Professor of Infectious Diseases and Co-Director of the UAB Center for AIDS Research will present “Ending AIDS in Alabama.”
