Internal Medicine Residents Robert Smola, MD, Carlie Stein, MD, William Benton, MD, and Rajat Kalra, MD, have been selected to participate in the UAB Medicine Chief Quality Resident Program

Paul Fitzmorris, MD (PGY-3) was just published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology for his case study “An Unusual Presentation of Hepatocellular Carcinoma.”

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has awarded a $7.5 million grant to to identify potential new drugs for people with rare cystic fibrosis mutations, known as nonsense mutations. Steven Rowe, MD (Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine) will collaborate on this project with UAB microbiologist David Bedwell, PhD, and Southern Research.

Surya Bhatt, MD (Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine) has received a Center for Clinical and Translational Science KL2 Scholar award for career development. His project, “Diastolic Dysfunction and Pauci-inflammatory Acute Exacerbations of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease” will explore complex heart-lung interactions during acute exacerbations of COPD.

Ricardo Franco, MD (Infectious Diseases) has received a grant from the Center for Healthy African American Men Through Partnerships. He and Dr. James Galbraith (Emergency Medicine) will examine national databases to investigate ethnic disparities and end-stage liver disease outcomes in populations living with chronic hepatitis C in Deep South areas.

James Raper, DSN (Infectious Diseases) celebrated his 20th year at the 1917 Clinic in September. Watch this video salute to his exemplary service. 

Two junior faculty members in Hematology and Oncology, Amitkumar Mehta, MD, and Ravi Palluri, MD, were selected to participate in the UAB National Clinical Trial Network Lead Academic Participating Site Young Investigator Mentoring Program for 2015-2017 which is funded by the National Cancer Institute.

In a proactive effort to encourage philanthropic giving, Randall Davis, MD (Hematology and Oncology) has reached out to people impacted by B Cell Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) and lymphoproliferative disorders. To date, this collaborative effort with the SOM development team has raised over $200,000 for his ongoing research in cancer immunobiology, thanks to the generosity of patients and families whose lives Dr. Davis has touched.
