Prevention of Head and Neck Impact Injury by Improved Helmet Design

The purpose of this project was to build on the existing expertise in adult head and neck injury at Duke University’s Injury and Orthopaedic Biomechanics Laboratory. Specifically, Dr. Myers’ team is developing and testing a prototype Neck and Head Injury Reducing Helmet Design for use by either bicycle or motorcycle riders.

The test fixture developed by the Myers team has the ability to quantify current and proposed head-injury metrics in three dimensions, including a center-of-gravity acceleration, HIC, and the vector angular acceleration as a function of time.
