AI Use Across Academics, Research, & Administrative/Enterprise Functions

Expectations for AI use may vary by role and context. The guidance below highlights key considerations across major UAB functions.

Academics (Teaching and Learning)

Faculty have flexibility in determining how AI is used in their courses, and students benefit from clear and transparent expectations.

Faculty and instructors looking to integrate AI into teaching and learning should refer to the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), which offers practical resources, syllabus guidance, and workshops on the responsible use of AI in education.

Research

AI may support research and scholarly workflows when used transparently and in alignment with sponsor and publisher guidance.

  • Do not upload draft manuscripts, unpublished research data, or content not intended for immediate public release into unauthorized or public generative AI tools.
  • Consult research sponsors and publishers for guidance on appropriate AI use in grant proposals, peer review, and publications.

Established processes for responsible conduct of research continue to apply.

Researchers remain responsible for validating AI-assisted outputs and complying with applicable research integrity standards.

Clinical

AI tools may support clinical innovation and workflow improvement when used within approved systems and safeguards.

  • Patient information and PHI must not be entered into public or unauthorized AI tools.
  • HIPAA and UAB Health System policies always apply.
  • AI-enabled innovation should occur only within approved tools and clinical workflows.

Human clinical judgment remains essential, and clinicians are responsible for decisions informed by AI.

Administrative/Enterprise Functions

AI may be explored and used within administrative and enterprise operations to support efficiency, analysis, and internal workflows.

  • Units may explore approved generative AI capabilities for internal use within their school, college, or unit.
  • Use only UAB-approved AI tools and appropriate, non-sensitive information unless explicitly authorized.
  • AI use must comply with existing IT, data protection, procurement, contracting, and communication policies.
  • Staff remain responsible for reviewing, validating, and approving AI-assisted outputs before use.

When you are unsure, pause and ask. Early questions help avoid risk and support responsible AI use and innovation.
