Candidates who wish to obtain the UAB Spanish for Specific Purposes Certificate must fulfill the following requirements.
UAB Students
Regular (degree-seeking) UAB students will:- Have completed the Spanish pre-requisites specific to each SSPC course.
- Enter with and maintain a minimum of 2.8 GPA in Spanish courses.
- Submit an electronic application and receive formal acceptance to the SSPC program.
- Obtain a B grade or above in all SSPC courses (students will be able to retake courses for a higher grade).
- Complete a minimum of 6 classes (18 credit hours) of SSP classes in the UAB Department of World Languages and Literatures, of which a minimum of 12 credits must be at the 300 level (3 SSP/SPA classes and a world language internship).
- Complete a successful SSP Internship or service-learning course (3 credit hours) as part of the credit hour requirements.
- Complete a successful exit proficiency exam in Spanish (Intermediate-Mid or above by ACTFL guidelines).
Nontraditional Students
In addition to the requirements specified above, nontraditional students will have a minimum of 12 credit hours of successful college-level work (grade C or above in all courses), with the following minimum distribution: at least 6 credit hours in English Composition (Area 1), at least 3 credit hours in Arts and Humanities (Area 2), and at least 3 credit hours in Social Sciences (Area 4).
