Louis Watanabe’s 2017 PLoS One article describes and characterizes the Rotating Exercise Quantification System (REQS), a novel assay system developed by Louis to assess the amount of exercise performed by Drosophila during rotational stimulation. His initial studies demonstrate that the amount of exercise animals perform is strongly dependent on genotype and sex and illustrate the utility of the REQS in comparing different exercise regimes. The REQS is the first system for Drosophila that allows for the quantification of exercise and thus enables standardization of exercise treatments.
