MyLab is a 20-30 minute weekend program for families. In MyLab, you will explore themes from the day-long GENEius programs. These labs will allow you to use modern science technology to expand your knowledge of the scientific world and how it directly relates to your life and our planet. These hands-on laboratory experiences are led by UAB CORD staff. MyLab is free of charge with admission to the McWane Science Center and is open to families with children of all ages.



Fly Lab
Become a Geneticist and explore fruit flies in a whole new way. Using microscopes you will examine the fly's wings, eyes, trunk pattern, and search for mutations. Using this information learn about the fly's genetics and how this affects its life and offspring. This program is designed for middle school-aged students and their families.

HIV Attack
Increase your awareness of HIV which affects billions of lives everyday around the world. Begin the lab by playing a mock fluid exchange game and learn how quickly a virus can spread without proper control. Learn the truth behind how HIV/AIDS is prevented and transmitted and how you can protect yourself. Learn to use internet sources to expand your knowledge and find out how Alabama is affected by HIV and AIDS. Learn to use modern methods to detect mock HIV proteins. This program is designed for elementary school-aged children and their families.
Sickle Cell Anemia
Work to solve the mystery of the sickle cell. Throughout this lab you will investigate sickle cell anemia on different molecular levels. First level you will examine red blood cells using microscopes and learn the difference between healthy and sickle (unhealthy) blood cells. Next you will learn what makes cells different in the human body and how they help you. Finally using electrophoresis learn the different properties of sickle DNA and hemoglobin. This program is designed for middle school-aged students and their families.

My Brainy Lab
You're a true neuro-scientist so let's explore the space between your ears! During this lab we will dissect a sheep brain and compare it to a human's brain. You can discover how the brain takes in information and allows you to walk and run. You will also learn how the brain helps you see, hear, smell, and taste. This program is designed for middle school-aged students and their families.
