Superheroes have emerged from the pages of comic books and onto our movie and television screens. These popular characters continue to reach millions of viewers worldwide. The popularity of these costumed heroes can give students and educators an opportunity to discuss concepts like "truth and justice” in ways that can be educational and engaging.

In past years, there has been an explosion of superhero films and comics penetrating mainstream popular culture. Specifically, there has been a growth of diverse characters either being included in major storylines or appearing in their own series such as DC Comics’ Justice League, The Flash, Black Lightning, and Gotham to Marvel’s The Defenders, Luke Cage, Spider-Man, X-Men and most recently, Black Panther. We invite you to join us in exploring how fictionalized narratives of popular Marvel/DC Superheroes are used to facilitate open and honest discussion about real-world social justice issues. Panelists include Dr. Matthew King (UAB Department of Philosophy); Ana Maria Santiago (UAB English Department); and students Lok Yem, Katie McIntyre, and Ghislaine Celine Atkins. The event is free and open to the public and will be held in room 106 of Heritage Hall on the campus of UAB at 6:00 p.m. on February 7th. All are welcome.
