At UAB, engineering fundamentals are put to the test in projects that teach students how to design and build, beginning with freshman engineering courses and extending to Senior Design—with plenty of opportunities in between.

The department’s focus is on engineering the built environment — roads, buildings, sustainable materials, bridges, stormwater management. We incorporate technology and problem solving for the planning, designing, and constructing of our communities.

The department provides students with a solid foundation in any of the areas of electrical engineering, including advanced analog and digital electronics, microprocessor applications, biomedical instrumentation, digital computer systems, power systems, and more. Graduates are well suited for careers in industry or for further academic study toward a Ph.D. or M.D.

Materials Science and Engineering

Materials engineering involves the development, production, modification, and application of engineering materials to meet the specific needs of society. It is based on an understanding of the structures and forces that control the engineering properties of metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites. Materials Engineers are employed in every major industry.

Mechanical engineering is a broad-based discipline that embraces two major topic areas — mechanical systems and thermal systems. With an understanding of the phenomena associated with these topics, mechanical engineers conceive and design a wide variety of devices, machines, and systems to meet the needs and desires of a modern economy.
