Explore UAB

The UAB School of Engineering will host a variety of summer camps in 2026.

The camps, which range from two to four days in length, cover a variety of engineering disciplines, but they all will emphasize hands-on experience to develop fundamental engineering skills.

  • Drone Academy

    Drone Academy
    June 8-12, July 7-10

The camping season begins on June 8 with the first section of the Drone Academy. Now in it's third year as a UAB-led camp, Drone Academy invites participants to design and build their own remote-controlled vehicles before testing them against a series of obstacles. The camp is led by experienced UAB faculty, and campers will be assisted by current engineering students.

  • Mechanical Engineering: Going Airborne with Classic Trebuchet

Mechanical Engineering: Going Airborne with Classic Trebuchet
    June 15-18, June 29-July 2

Experience engineering through the design, fabrication, and testing of a tabletop version of the classic trebuchet. Campers will get hands-on experience with the design and fabrication process, utilizing tools such as computer modeling, 3D printing, and rapid prototyping in a structured scientific testing process designed to find the optimal size, geometry, and weight distribution for both the trebuchet and the projectile. At the end of the four-day camp, students will get to put their design to the test in a real-life Angry-Birds-style competition to test the accuracy, power, and effectiveness of their design vs other campers. Campers should expect to walk away with more knowledge of mechanical concepts such as potential vs kinetic energy and the implementation of leverage as well as knowledge of modern design and fabrication techniques.

  • Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering

    June 22-23

Civil engineering is a broad discipline that covers almost everything in the world around us. This camp packs a lot of hands-on experiences into two days, teaching participants about the science behind our built environment--from buildings, roads and bridges, to water supplies and even the air that we breathe. The camp will include tours of UAB's campus as well as visits to local construction sites.

  • Robotics, AI, and Coding

    Robotics, AI, and Coding
    July 13-16, July 20-23

This new UAB camp puts participants on the frontlines of tomorrow's technology. UAB faculty members will lead the camp, and participants will learn fundamental coding skills needed to design and build robots, while utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) effectively in their work.

  • Metals Casting Boot Camp

    Metals Casting Bootcamp
    Dates TBA

The week-long Metal Casting Bootcamp will welcome high-school or college students who are interested in exploring careers in metal-related industry. Participants will work alongside UAB faculty and current industry professionals at UAB's Materials Processing and Applications Development (MPAD) facility on activities such as Computer CAD modeling, 3D printing and creating sand molds, lost-foam casting, casting of iron skillets, and post-treatment of castings.

    .

Attendees who complete all five days of the program will receive certification and can qualify for apprentice positions with select companies.
