After two years of an unmonitored self-service system, the UAB Recycling Drop-Off Center is announcing new, staffed hours.
“We’ve experienced a shift in the recycling industry as a whole and locally, which makes this change necessary,” said Tim Sullivan, Manager of Facilities Support Services. “The worldwide demand for recycled plastic has dropped, the Alabama Environmental Council recycling center closed, and we’ve seen a significant increase in trash being dumped into the unmonitored recycling stream.”
Trash in recycling streams dirties the recyclable goods, forcing them to be sent to a landfill. UAB Recycling is changing the drop-off system to educate those using the service on what is recyclable and to ensure the stream remains clean.
The new service hours are 7-9 a.m. and 4-5:30 p.m. Monday and Thursday. The Drop-Off Center is conveniently located at 620 11th St. S. Customers are encouraged to bring recyclable material already separated in any bag, box or carrying bin. All containers may be kept for reuse.
