Hospital Support & Maintenance is responsibile for the inspection, testing and maintenance of the UAB and Highlands Hospital physical environments, which includes more than 6 million square feet of clinical space. We are responsible for maintaining the sophisticated and complex clinical facilities, as well as associated environmental stewardship and regulatory compliance.

  • General "Block" Maintenance

    Buildings are divided into areas of responsibility for routine/general work called Blocks. The following buildings are divided into these blocks:


    Block area services include:

    • Complete basic mechanical, electrical, plumbing, carpentry and painting repairs
    • Repair/replace ceiling tiles
    • Replace lights and/or ballasts
    • Hang pictures and minor wall items
    • Repair molding and cove bases
    • Respond to clogged toilets, sinks and drains
    • Investigate roof leaks
    • Repair and maintain interior tile surfaces
    • Elevator/escalator breakdown initial response
    • Manual door repair
    • Wall repairs and touch-up wall paint
    • Above ceiling fire wall inspections and repairs

  • Electrical Systems

    The electric systems group is responsible for the inspection, testing, maintenance and repair of Hospital buildings' electrical, emergency generator, fire alarm system, etc.

    The following are some of the services provided:

    • Perform inspection, testing, preventive maintenance and repair services on electrical distribution systems
    • Emergency power and generator inspections, testing, maintenance and repairs
    • Reset tripped circuit breakers
    • Breaker replacement
    • Variable Frequency Drive maintenance
    • Detailed research for shutdowns and project coordination
    • Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) testing and maintenance
    • Project investigations for capacity and load requirements for new projects
    • Keeping drawings and one lines up to date

  • Plumbing Systems

    The plumbing systems group provides inspection, testing, maintenance and repair functions relating to plumbing and piping systems. Domestic hot/cold water systems, waste water systems, medical gas systems and components are serviced and maintained by the plumbing systems group. Emergency needs are addressed immediately as they become known.

    The plumbing systems group provides the following as regular maintenance jobs or projects:

    • Perform inspection, testing, preventive maintenance and repair on all plumbing (pipes and fixtures) integral to the building operation systems
    • Maintain water fire protection systems
    • Steam System maintenance and repair
    • Backflow preventer maintenance
    • Unplug drains and drain lines
    • Maintain services to plumbing appliances
    • Inspect, test, perform preventive maintenance and repairs on medical gas systems and components
    • Toilet/sink repair
    • Waste water line repair and maintenance

  • HVAC/R Systems

    The Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC/R) systems group is responsible for the inspection, testing, maintenance and repair of all Hospital heating and cooling systems.

    The following are some of the services provided by the HVAC/R systems group:

    • Perform inspection, testing and preventive maintenance on heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems and related equipment
    • Maintain Air-Bourne Infection Prevention rooms
    • Indoor Air Quality control and maintenance
    • Research/lab refrigeration/freezer support
    • Control air flows; repair and replace air handlers, exhaust fans and hoods
    • Ice machine and refrigerator repair
    • Repair building heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems
    • Maintain and repair evaporative coolers and air conditioning equipment

  • Medical Systems

    The Hospital engineering group provides inspection, testing, maintenance and repair functions relating to sterilization and pneumatic tube systems. Emergency needs are addressed immediately as they become known.

    • Central Sterilization

      • Ethylene oxide (EO) sterilizers and associated equipment
      • Washers, pasteurizers

      • Blowers
      • Carriers
      • Diverters
      • Linear couplers
      • Carrier Stations
      • Transfer Units

    • Medical Gas

      The following are the types of equipment that are inspected, tested, and maintained by, but not limited to, this group:

      • Control Valves
      • Surgical Booms
      • Outlets
