    Residence Hall Lobby Decoration Competition

    Bring the theme: Y2Blaze to life by decorating your residence hall lobby! This competition allows residence halls to showcase Blazer Pride by decorating the lobby areas. This competition is heavily weighted on the decoration of the lobby area. The 1st place winner of the Residence Hall Decoration Competition will have their hall name added to the competition’s perpetual plaque.

    1. The deadline to sign up to participate in the competition is Friday, October 6th at 5:00 PM.
    2. Only decorations at the entrance and in the lobby of your residence hall will be judged. Decorations that exceed the lobby will not be judged.
    3. At least one member of the building’s respective Hall Council or RA staff must be present to greet and escort judges.
    4. Winners will be chosen by the competition judges, who will be selected by the Blazer Spirit Council. All competing halls will be featured on the UAB Homecoming Instagram.
    5. Judging will take place on Monday, October 30th at 12:00 P.M. The order of judging will be emailed by the end of the day on October 26th.
    6. It will be the responsibility of the respective hall to clean up all decorations following Homecoming Week.
     

    Additional Safety Guidelines:

    • If fully painting windows in the egress paths, windows should have some separation/portions with no paint. This helps provide light and distinguish the outside elements from the inside. Ex. many of these typesof situations are in the lobby area’s (if any questions arise regarding this please reach out to Campus Safety)
    • Latex based paint products should be used
    • Nothing should be suspended from the ceiling or from a sprinkler head
    • It is recommended to use fire resistant materials when making art items.
    • Doorways and egress routes (to include corridors) should always be maintained free of obstructions.
    • Surface areas of walls and non-fire rated doors should be kept to a minimum of combustible materials and fire rated doors should remain free of these materials
    • Combustible materials stored in dedicated area’s should be kept to a minimum to reduce the fire load.
    • If using electrical cords, please ensure they are in good condition and have no defects. (note: extension cords are only allowed for temporary purposes and should be in good condition)

    Hill Student Center Office Decoration Competition
    October 30, 2023 | 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM
    Location: Hill Student Center

    Traveling trophy

    Bring the theme: Y2Blaze to life by decorating your office space inside and out! This competition allows Hill Student Center offices to showcase Blazer Pride by decorating the lobby area and outside of the office, such as any office front windows or doors. The 1st place winner of the Hill Student Center Office Decoration Competition will receive a traveling trophy to keep in their office until next year’s competition.

    1. The deadline to register to participate in the Hill Student Center Office Decoration Competition is Friday, October 6th at 5:00 PM.
    2. Only decorations at the entrance and in the lobby or main area of the office will be judged. Decorations that exceed the lobby will not be judged.
    3. At least one office staff member must be present to greet and escort judges.
    4. Judging will take place on Monday, October 30th at 2:00 P.M. The order of judging will be emailed by the end of the day on October 26th.
     

    Additional Guidelines

    • Do NOT include any items that may cause a fire hazard. Be sure not to block any strobes or sprinklers. No items should be hung from fire alarms, sprinkler heads or other devices
    • Decorations should not disrupt normal business operations of the office. At no time should decorations impede, egress, or obstruct access to the office. Items found to impede traffic flow or business operations must be removed immediately.
    • Decorations should be hung utilizing PAINTERS TAPE ONLY as to not damage any surfaces.
    • Any painting or design on storefront windows should be done utilizing water-based tempera paint only.
    • Offices are encouraged to utilize free standing displays, signs, etc.
    • Surface areas of walls and non-fire rated doors should be kept to a minimum of combustible materials and fire rated doors should remain free of these materials.
     

    NOTE:

    Offices assume full responsibility for any damages to walls, windows or other surfaces. Clean-up following the competition is the sole responsibility of the office. Offices may incur charges for any damages/clean-up following the competition.

    All decorations should be removed by Monday, November 6th at 5:00pm.

    This competition is heavily weighted on the decoration of the actual office. The goal is to display UAB spirit all week via the decorations on and around the exterior of your office. The judges for the competition will be student leaders.

  • Green and Gold Games

    Green and Gold Games
    Sunday, October 29th
    1:00 PM – 4:00 PM
    Location: Campus Green
    Rain Location: UREC (Courts 2-4)

    The Blazer Spirit Council invites groups to come out to the Green to participate in a fun-filled event featuring capture the flag, tug-a-war, potato sac race, and .... All students are welcome to form teams.

    1. This competition is open for groups participating in the Blazer Spirit Competition as well as those who would like to participate in the Field Day Competition only.
      1. Teams competing in the week-long Blazer Spirit Competition are eligible for spirit points and a prize.
      2. Teams competing only in the Green & Gold Games are eligible for a prize only. 
    2. Teams will compete in several challenges. Winners will be determined based on total points.
    3. Teams should arrive between 12:30 pm to 1:00 pm to check in.  
    4. There must be at least 4-5 people per team present to compete.
    5. Tennis shoes and comfortable clothing are encouraged.
    6. Matching team outfits are encouraged. Best dressed team will win a prize.
  • Homecoming Dragon Drive

    Time: During all event times
    Location: All Events hosted by the Blazer Spirit Council

    Teams will be given participation points for donating non-perishable food, toiletry items, school supplies, and gently used t-shirts during Homecoming Week.

    1. A representative from each team may bring in donated items to Blazer Spirit Council-run Homecoming events starting on Sunday, October 29 to Thursday, November 2. Check all event dates, times, and locations to donate items.
      • Wednesday, November 1st, the Student Involvement and Leadership Office (HSC 230) will be open to accept donations from 9 AM- 5PM.
    2. All food and toiletry items will be donated to the Blazer Kitchen. All t-shirts will be donated to a local shelter.
  • Blazer Showdown

    Thursday, November 2nd
    Time: 7–10 pm
    Location: Campus Green
    Rain Location: Jemison Concert Hall

    Showcase your team’s Blazer spirit and display the Homecoming theme through talent and creativity during the annual Blazer Showdown!

    All other teams +15 Points for participation

    1. Display your team’s best presentation, depiction, or story of the Homecoming theme “Y2Blaze” in a creative performance.
    2. Winners from each division will be selected by judges’ scores.
    3. Performances may include dancing, skits, lip syncing, voiceovers, cheers/chants, and other creative displays of school spirit.
    4. Music/Soundtrack must be submitted on a flash drive clearly labeled with organization and event name (e.g., Blaze Club, Blazer Showdown) no later than 5 pm on Tuesday, September 27 to Mi’Kasa Mitchell in Hill Student Center 230 or emailed the file to This email address is being protected from spambots.       1. Music must be a mP3 or mP4 file.
    5. There will be a maximum of 15 groups allowed to register for this event no matter the division. The first 15 teams to register will be placed on the performance roster. Additional teams will be placed on a waiting list in the event any of the original 15 teams back out of performing.
    6. Only a maximum of 12 performers and 4 stagehands may be involved in a team’s performance. 1 additional person may serve as music technical support. If you choose to partner with another organization, you are still only allowed a maximum of 12 performers, 4 stagehands, and 1 music technical support.
      1. All participants must be from the list of members submitted at the time of registration.
    7. All performers must be currently enrolled UAB students in good standing.
    8. Each team is allowed an 8-minute maximum performance including all setup and takedown. Time begins when team members or props enter the stage and ends when team members/props exit the stage. If a team has exceeded the 8 minutes allocated, 5 points will be deducted from their overall competition score.
    9. All participants must sign in an hour before the start of the show. Each participant will receive a wristband.
    10. No music changes may be made on the day of the show.
    11. A mandatory run of show for all teams will occur on the day of Blazer Showdown. A schedule will be created by the Blazer Spirit Council. Failure to show up for run-throughs may result in disqualification. If your show is deemed inappropriate, the Blazer Spirit Council reserves the right to disqualify the team.
    12. Minor gymnastics are allowed. If stunts are deemed unsafe during rehearsal, BSC reserves the right to have them removed on the day of the show
    13. No items may be thrown into the crowd.
    14. No members may jump/get off stage during the performance. No one may be pulled onto the stage from the audience during the performance.
    15. No trampolines, springboards, etc. may be used in the performance.
    16. All liquid substances are prohibited.
    17. We highly encourage teams to NOT use fog machines. If a fog machine is necessary, it must be water-based. Also you must contactThis email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. immediately after you register to notify us of fog machine usage. Please note that your request may be subject to denial.
    18. Failure to pick up props immediately after the event will result in a fine of $50.
    19. Props cannot be taller than 10 feet.
    20. Use of fire is prohibited.
    21. Profanity and other vulgar references are prohibited.
    22. No ripping off shirts or other clothes.
    23. No excessive twerking.
    24. STEPPING/STOMPING/STROLLING is NOT permitted.
      1. Only NPHC and MGC organizations may step or stroll.
