    Tarek is originally from Montgomery, and made Birmingham home for undergrad at UAB. The city has substantial meaning as he stayed at UAB for medical school and is excited to continue that theme by training in the Tinsley Harrison Internal Medicine Program for residency. He attributes his love for medicine in the academic setting with his upbringing enriched in sports pointing parallels between operating in teams on the field with teams in the hospital. He has a keen interest in academic medicine, but he is undecided on what field that will be in. Away from medicine, he enjoys being a foodie around Birmingham and also has a love for any sport one can imagine.
  • Karen N. Arnaud

    Karen was born in New Orleans, LA and grew up in Mandeville. She went to LSU for undergraduate where she studied Public Relations. She became focused on a career in medicine and subsequently went to LSUHSC School of Medicine in New Orleans. She is excited to start her residency training at the outstanding internal medicine program at UAB. After one year, she will continue on to Vanderbilt University to complete her training in Dermatology. In her off time, Karen enjoys cooking, live music, exercising and spending time with family.
  • Calvin Baker

    Calvin was born in Opelika, AL before growing up in Anniston, AL. He stayed near home for an undergraduate degree in Biology from Jacksonville State University. He then moved to the Gulf Coast for a medical degree at the University of South Alabama. He is excited to complete his residency in Birmingham. He is keeping an open mind but is currently interested in pursuing a nephrology fellowship after residency. In his free time, he enjoys exploring new breweries with his fiancee, Amanda, and walking his two dogs, Buford and Pepper.
  • Madeline Bender

    Maddie grew up in the Air Force, and her family moved 10 times all across the country before she was 18 years old. She went to Notre Dame for undergraduate then ventured south to UAB for medical school when she decided she had enough of snow. There she met her soon-to-be husband, Dewey Brooke, an MD/PhD student researching cancer biology. He helped her get to know Birmingham, and she decided there was no place she would rather be for residency! Maddie is interested in academic general internal medicine but considering a variety of specialties. She likes cooking new recipes for dinner, decorating for holidays, and petting every dog she sees (She hopes she will have one of her own some day!).
  • Jordan Boudreaux

    Jordan grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and attended LSU for his undergraduate degree. He then moved to New Orleans to attend LSU medical school where he met his fiance, Emily. He is excited about the excellent training and friendly atmosphere at UAB and intends to pursue a career in either Gastroenterology or Pulmonary/Critical Care. In his free time, Jordan likes homebrewing beer, attending local concerts, and cheering for the Tigers.
  • Phillip Branch

    Phillip is a Tennesseean born and bred, growing up in Memphis, TN where he most often indulged in Grizzlies basketball, quality family time, and Bar-B-Q. After finishing high school, he moved just a few hours northeast to Nashville, TN to attend Vanderbilt University, where he majored in Medicine, Health, & Society at Vandy's sociology-based, pre-med major. Upon finishing his undergraduate studies, he moved back home where he coached basketball for a year before returning to Nashville to begin the journey of Meharry Medical College for the 5-year Masters/M.D. program. Along the way, he proposed to and married UAB Emergency Medicine alum Dr. Sherell Hicks, who also happens to be his high school sweetheart. Though Phillip is currently unsure of his particular subspecialty interests, he is steadfast in his desire to work within academia as education and mentorship are among his greatest passions. His free time most often lends to participating in or watching football and basketball, eating way too much, and traveling to see loved ones.
  • Glenn Carman

    Glenn grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and bleeds Purple and Gold, having gone to LSU for undergrad and LSU New Orleans School of Medicine. He is excited about leaving home to continue his training in Birmingham and looks forward to enjoying the abundance of hiking trails and breweries. Glenn hopes to pursue a career in either critical care medicine or infectious disease. In his free time, Glenn enjoys playing music, spending time outdoors, and rooting for the Tigers.
  • Nida Choudry

    Born and raised in South Carolina, Nida chose to stay close to home to attend Wofford College for her undergraduate education and later, the Medical University of South Carolina for her graduate degree. She is excited to make the big move to Birmingham for residency and is interested in pursuing a career in gastroenterology. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, running, baking, spending time with her family, and watching soccer games.
  • John Dasher

    John was born in Huntsville, AL to an artist father and a pharmacist mother. He attended Auburn University where he studied biomedical science and spent an excessive amount of time covered in body paint at football games. He completed medical school at UAB and is very excited to be continuing his stay here. He plans to pursue a career in oncology after residency. When not in the hospital, John enjoys hiking, gardening, vinyl records, and motorcycle repair.
  • Autumn Demonbreun

    Autumn was born and raised in Nashville, TN. She attended undergrad in Memphis, TN at Rhodes College. She then went to medical school in Johnson City, TN, located in the Appalachian region, to attend East Tennessee State Univ. During medical school, she developed a love for hiking the various mountain trails in the East Tennessee/ North Carolina regions and met her fiancee, Ndukwe. Autumn is interested in pursuing a career in primary care or hospital medicine but is also considering fellowship in infectious disease. Autumn enjoys baking gluten free desserts, spending time with family and friends, and traveling to new places.
  • Divya Devabhaktuni

    Divya grew up in South Florida before heading up to the University of Florida (go Gators!) for undergrad where she studied Microbiology and Human Nutrition, while minoring in the Classics. For medical school, she went to the University of Central Florida. She is leaning towards pursuing a career in gastroenterology and being involved in academic medicine. She is excited to venture out of Florida and experience the leaves changing color in the fall. In her free time, she will be exploring the restaurants and hiking trails that Birmingham has to offer.
  • Sydney Dunn-Valadez

    Sydney is a proud native of the Lone Star State, Austin, Texas. She then went on to attend Texas A&M University for her undergraduate education and completed medical school at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. She is excited for this new adventure and is thrilled about continuing her training here at UAB. She has many interests within internal medicine and is looking forward to shaping her career here in Birmingham. In her free time, Sydney enjoys golfing, Lagree fitness classes, and spending time with her family and friends.
  • Alex Edgil

    Alex was born and raised in Jasper, AL. He attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham for his undergraduate studies and returned to UAB for his medical degree after working in healthcare IT. Coming from a family of UAB alumni, he is excited to continue his training as a Blazer! He plans to pursue a career in academics, but has always had a passion for preventive medicine in rural and underserved communities. While Alex enjoys outdoor activities, on most days off you can find him at restaurants doing two of his favorite things: sitting and eating.
  • Hannah Edwards

    Hannah was born in Virginia, but moved to Georgia with her family when she was very young. She attended the University of Georgia and graduated with a degree in Health Promotion & Behavior before attending medical school at Mercer University School of Medicine. Although she is a true Georgia girl, she looks forward to making Birmingham her new home! After residency, she is interested in pursuing a career in general primary care or academic medicine. In her free time she enjoys playing with her dog Atticus, watching Georgia football (Go Dawgs!), gardening, and reading.
  • Michael Fister

    Michael grew up in Nashville before attending school at the University of Tennessee (Go Vols!). He then moved across the state to Memphis to attend medical school at the University of Tennessee. He is interested in pursuing a career in general internal medicine as well as international medicine. Michael enjoys playing and watching any sport, hiking, rock climbing, and being involved with his church. He is also a self-proclaimed food critic and is excited to get to know the restaurants in Birmingham.
  • Ryan Goetz

    Ryan was born and raised in Cold Spring, Kentucky and moved to Savannah, Georgia in high school. He went to a small state university in Savannah, and felt called to pursue a career in medicine during his junior year. During Ryan's time at the Medical College of Georgia, he discovered an interest in diagnostic challenges and seeing patient's lives changed by medical interventions. Ryan intends to pursue a career in pulmonary/critical care medicine with the intention of staying in the South and serving rural patients. In his spare time, Ryan enjoys backpacking/hiking, history (medical and otherwise), international medical mission work, and cooking.
  • Joseph Granade

    Joseph grew up in Niceville, Florida before heading to Auburn University. After finishing college, he then moved to "The Magic City" Birmingham for medical school. During medical school he spent his third year in Huntsville, AL where he fell in love with trail running. Now he enjoys running the Vulcan Trail, biking to the hospital, playing racquetball, and hosting boardgame nights for friends. He is not certain which medical specialty of medicine he will pursue, but is currently interested in cardiology and pulmonary critical care.
  • Marquis Griffin

    Marquis was born and raised in Augusta, Ga. He Bleeds Blue after various chemistry experiments at Georgia State University, and he completed medical school at Morehouse School of Medicine. He is excited to avoid Atlanta traffic and join a collegial group of residents and staff at the UAB Internal Medicine Residency Program. He intends subspecialize and is currently leaning towards Cardiology or Nephrology. His interests include hiking, camping, biking, video games, and anything related to technology.
  • Jingnan Han

    Jingnan was born in Dongying, China. After high school, she attended Peking University for medical school. Instead of continuing her physician career locally, she was eager to experience a different, new culture and explore more variety in the medical field. She went to Johns Hopkins School of Medicine for her graduate study. She is delighted to be admitted by UAB ABIM track for internal medicine/cardiology training. Spending several years in the field of Cardiology research, she has really enjoyed her experiences and aims to pursue an academic career in Cardiology. Outside of work, she likes traveling, exploring the nature, cooking, and of course, enjoys good food.
  • Usman Hasnie

    Usman was born in Louisville, KY but he grew up in Grand Blanc, MI. He started his undergraduate career at the University of Michigan, before deciding to enter the BA/MD program at UMKC. He is excited to move down to Birmingham and is looking forward to starting residency at UAB. Usman intends to pursue an academic career in Cardiology. In his free time, Usman loves to play all sports, especially basketball and root for University of Michigan sports teams. Go Blue!
  • Callie R. Hill

    Callie grew up in Huntsville, AL and first called Birmingham home when she attended Samford University for college. She followed in her fathers footsteps in pursuing the very best medical school training at the one, the only, UABSOM. She met her husband during medical school and also became the proud mom of two Labrador retrievers. Callie and her husband were thrilled to match at UAB! After completing her intern year, she will remain at UAB for a dermatology residency. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and dogs, running, cooking, yard games, a good book, strong coffee, and lakes days (sunscreen, CHECK!).
  • Olivia Hudson

    Olivia was born in Lansing, MI. She grew up cheering for the Spartans (go green!) and attended Michigan State University for both college and medical school. After living in Michigan for almost 30 wonderful years, Olivia could not be more excited to explore a new state and city. She is thrilled to have the opportunity to train at UAB and plans on pursuing an academic career in either pulmonary critical care or cardiology. When not working, she enjoys spending time with her significant other, family and friends as well as trying new restaurants and being outdoors.
  • Omar Ismail

    Omar was born in London, England, but grew up in Anniston, AL. He completed both college and medical school at UAB, and is excited to remain in Birmingham for a year of preliminary medicine. In his spare time, he enjoys playing basketball, reading for leisure, and spending time with his family, particularly his new niece.
  • Aditi Jani

    Aditi was born in the United Kingdom but thinks of Birmingham, AL as her home. She attended UAB as an undergraduate and continued there for medical school, where she also earned her MSPH in Healthcare Organization and Policy with a focus on Patient-Centered Outcomes Research. She and her husband, Kevin Shrestha, an OB-GYN resident, couples matched to UAB and are thrilled to continue their training at this incredible institution. In her free time, Aditi enjoys making and eating desserts, traveling, and hiking with her husband and their goldendoodle, Ellie.
  • Ryan LaGrange

    Ryan grew up in Wilmington, NC and stayed at the beach for college where he also played on the baseball team for the University of North Carolina Wilmington. After graduating he moved to Greenville, NC where he attended the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. He is undecided which field of medicine he will ultimately pursue but is interested in teaching in an academic clinical setting. Outside of medicine he enjoys spending time with his wife, Mandi, and his well-fed cat, as well as outdoor activities, sports, working out, and working on projects around the house. Both he and his wife are excited to discover all that Birmingham has to offer and to join the UAB family.
  • Tofey Leon

    Tofey was born and raised in Mobile, Alabama. Though his entire family graduated from the University of Alabama, he spent his undergraduate years at Auburn University. He moved to Birmingham for medical school where he met his wife, Kelsie. They are thrilled that he will be continuing his training in at UAB. They are grateful for their church community and enjoy all that Birmingham has to offer - namely the hiking trails, restaurants, coffee shops, and breweries.
  • John Locke

    John was born and raised in the small town of Benton, Kentucky. He attended Murray State University for college where he met his future wife, Heather. After a four-year stop in Louisville for medical school, they are excited to now be in Birmingham for John's residency. In their free time, they enjoy trying out new restaurants and breweries. As a lifelong baseball fan, you'll often find John trying to convince Heather to spend an evening watching the Barons at Regions Field.
  • Catherine Lumb

    Catherine was born and raised in Huntsville, AL. She attended Auburn University for her undergraduate education before moving to Birmingham for medical school at the UABSOM. She is very excited to be staying in Birmingham due to the wonderful residents and faculty that she met here during her clinical years. Catherine is interested in Gerontology and Palliative Care and will be pursuing a career in academic medicine. When she isn't working, you will find her playing frisbee, soccer, or hiking around one of Birmingham's many beautiful parks.
  • Tylan Magnusson

    Tylan was born in Arizona, and then spent the next 21 years bouncing around the United States, South and Central America due to his father's career in the Air Force and his own religious responsibilities. He is married to a wonderful gal and is the proud father of two; he spends most of his free time playing with them or watching Thomas the Tank Engine. He is thrilled to train at UAB and avoid shoveling snow for many years to come. His children are excited to be closer to their grandparents. At this time, Tylan is interested in pursuing a fellowship in Hematology and Oncology.

    Hazim was born in Alberta, Canada and moved to Madison, Alabama at a young age. He received his bachelors degree in Biology from UAB and decided to stay there for medical school. He is excited to remain in Birmingham for his residency in Internal Medicine. He is currently interested in pursuing a fellowship in Hematology/Oncology. In his free time he enjoys hiking, spending time with his wife, and watching and playing many sports, especially basketball (Go Raptors!).
  • Michael Mullarkey

    Michael was born and raised in Dallas, Texas and attended The University of Texas at Austin for undergrad. He graduated from Paul L. Foster School of Medicine in El Paso. He was drawn to Birmingham by the collegial environment, camaraderie among residents and the city's vibrant, diverse population. After residency, he plans to pursue either gastroenterology or hospitalist medicine, but knows he wants to stay in academics. Outside of work, he enjoys superfluous trips to Barnes and Noble, college football (Hook 'em Horns!), and hiking with his fiancee and their German Shepherd mix.
  • Priya Nethala

    Priya was born and raised for most of her life in Laconia, New Hampshire. She studied Neuroscience and Biochemistry at the College of William and Mary in Virginia before moving to Michigan for medical school. She has enjoyed exploring new areas of the country with each chapter of her life but is especially looking forward to the warmer weather in Birmingham. After residency, she is interested in pursuing a career in gastroenterology. In her spare time, she enjoys running, baking, traveling, and trying new restaurants.

    Chelsea was born and raised in Athens, Alabama and went to the University of Alabama for her undergraduate studies (Roll Tide!). She attended medical school at The University of Alabama at Birmingham and loved it so much she decided to continue her training at UAB for residency. Chelsea intends to pursue a career in academic medicine and is currently interested in general internal medicine as her specialty. In her spare time, she enjoys entertaining and cooking for family and friends, gardening, and fostering kittens for the Humane Society.
  • Robert Parker

    Robert grew up in Johns Creek, Georgia before moving to Athens to attend UGA. After graduating in 2014 with a Biology degree, he took one year off to do research before moving to Augusta and starting medical school at the Medical College of Georgia. While at MCG, Robert met his girlfriend Mariah. They are very excited to have matched together to UAB where Mariah will be training in Pediatrics. Robert is drawn to inpatient medicine, but is currently undecided about specializing. He enjoys golf, indoor rock climbing, and traveling. Go Dawgs!

    Nirav was born and brought up in a small village in India. He has done both his undergrad and medical school in India. He came to US to pursue his desire to become a physician-scientist. After involving into clinical and translational research in cardiology, he is continuing his clinical training at UAB. In his spare time, he enjoys exploring the new places to hangout with his wife and friends.
  • Myles Prados

    Myles grew up just outside of New Orleans and decided to journey out of state for undergrad at College of Charleston in South Carolina. He then returned home to attend LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans, enjoying delicious food every step of the way. He is excited to move again to a different Southern city and explore all that Birmingham has to offer. He wants to stay in academic medicine and is interested in pursuing a career as either a Hospitalist or in Infectious Disease. He also has a particular interest in HIV care and in medical education. In his free time he enjoys cooking, eating, and consuming pop culture.
  • Karan Sarode

    Karan was born in Chandigarh, India and moved to America at the age of 5. Since then, he has spent at least two years in the following cities: Milwaukee, New York, Cleveland, Dallas, San Antonio, Boulder, and El Paso. Now he is eagerly anticipating his time in Birmingham. He graduated medical school from Texas Tech Paul L Foster School of Medicine in El Paso, TX, where he also met his beautiful wife. He was driven to choose UAB due to its clinical rigor along with the prospect of moving out of Texas. In his spare time he enjoys playing golf, basketball, watching sports, enjoying the outdoors, traveling, and craft beers.
  • Jeffrey Shen

    Jeffrey grew up in both California and Alabama. In high school, he was inspired to pursue a career in medicine by Dr. Lisa Sanders' medical mystery column in the New York Times. After attending medical school at UAB, he is excited to continue his training at UAB during residency. His career interests remain open, but he has a passion for diagnostic challenges and rare diseases. In his spare times he enjoys playing piano, singing, listening to motivational speakers, cooking, playing ping-pong, and reading.
  • Courtney Wagner

    Courtney is a native Floridian and was always in or around the water either fishing, SCUBA diving, or swimming competitively. She worked as a critical care nurse for few years before pursuing medicine. It was at the bedside she discovered a passion for the geriatric population and palliative medicine. These have remained areas of interest while in medical school at her alma mater, the University of Central Florida. Courtney is thrilled to be joining UAB for Internal Medicine. Outside of medicine, Courtney enjoys triathlons, hiking, podcasts, and cooking.
  • Bo Wang

    Bo was born in Wuhan, China, and grew up in Atlanta, GA. He attended Emory University for undergrad and the Medical College of Georgia for medical school. He is excited to explore Birmingham and is honored to train in internal medicine at UAB. After residency, he plans to pursue a fellowship in cardiology. In his free time, he enjoys cooking, traveling, exercising, and watching football.
  • Sylvia Yong

    Sylvia was raised in South Korea in her early formative years, then grew up in Florida after her family moved back to the US. Upon graduating from University of Notre Dame (Go Irish!), she completed a research project at the Pasteur Institute in France. After attending University of Central Florida for medical school, Sylvia is excited to make Birmingham her tenth city to live in during residency training. She is currently unsure of which specialty of medicine she would like to pursue but would love to always have a component of medical education in her future career. In her free time, Sylvia enjoys the contradictory hobbies of running/yoga and baking, as well as learning about French culture and literature.
