Overview
The Kidney Disease Screening and Awareness Program (KDSAP) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham strives to serve the individuals of underserved populations in Birmingham by providing them access to a free kidney disease screenings. These screenings are student-led and allow for students to develop connections with the vibrant community surrounding UAB and foster their own career development. Since Alabama has one of the highest rates of chronic kidney disease in the United States, KDSAP’s ultimate goal is to alleviate the prevalence of this disease which plagues our community and ultimately work towards creating a healthier population.

Co-President - Amy Yang
My interests are in community-based healthcare, especially in the city of Birmingham — which is home to me. KDSAP has been a wonderful opportunity for me to serve in the city and encourage the screening of CKD, a disease that overburdens racial and ethnic minorities and is linked to major social determinants like food insecurity and poverty. Through KDSAP, I hope to raise awareness and make progress towards health equity.
Co-President - Marci Hall
KDSAP promotes health and wellness, and it is not limited to pre-med and pre-health students. The hands-on clinical experience and participant interaction guarantee every effort matters. I am honored to serve students, local health partners, and underserved communities!
Vice President - Umma Bah
I truly value the message and goal of KDSAP to spread awareness of CKD throughout the community. I have gotten to be behind the scenes of some very meaningful events to provide students with opportunities and expand their medical education. It is truly rewarding knowing that I get to be a part of the fight against kidney diseases and outreach to medically underserved areas of Birmingham.
Public Relations Coordinator - Justin Ryu
KDSAP offers every student the opportunity to get involved with the awareness and assessment of kidney health and CKD within the city that we live in. Through training and tabling events to community outreach and screenings, this organization helped me get into the field and impact people's lives for the better!
Outreach Coordinator - Angelina Hoang
KDSAP addresses the lack of information and lack of availability of kidney disease testing in Birmingham's disproportionately underprivileged neighborhoods. The kidney disease screenings are free, available to anybody who is interested, do not require any documentation, are provided with interpreters, and are co-hosted by our community partners, providing help to anyone who needs it which is super beneficial.
Treasurer - Sumanth Chandrupatla
I joined KDSAP because I am interested in medicine and have had an interest in how kidney disease affects the body. I have also gotten involved and sought to help underserved communities however I could, and I felt that joining KDSAP was the perfect opportunity for me to both get involved in both.
Communications Coordinator - Ammar Rana
KDSAP has the opportunity to expand my knowledge in the kidney field and assist in screenings to help the greater Birmingham population!

We encourage all of our members and students who are interested in Nephrology to sign up for the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) and American Physiological Society (APS). These organizations provide access to research mentorships, networking, career development grants, exclusive access to publications, and much more.
