Drs. McGee and MessnerDepartment of Orthopaedic Surgery third-year residents Andrew McGee, M.D. (left), and Mitchell Messner, M.D. (right), were appointed to the Dean's Council for Diversity Medical Education (DCGME) Patient Safety Subcommittee.

McGee and Messner will serve a one-year term on the subcommittee. The DCGME is committed to promoting a more diverse presence of highly qualified trainees at UAB while continuing to promote a culture and environment that is welcoming and inclusive.

Within the DCGME, the Patient Safety Subcommittee is composed of attendings and residents from a variety of specialties, from internal medicine to neurology to anesthesia to orthopedics, and everywhere in between. The group reviews specific cases and patient safety concerns in an effort to prevent future concerns.

Both residents are eager to represent the department and advocate for patient safety.

“I am honored to be invited to the table as a resident perspective to help improve patient safety across UAB,” said Messner. “We have excellent patient care and experience at UAB but are always looking for ways to improve and to continue to put our patients first.”
