We appreciate your interest in the UAB - BVAMC Clinical Psychology Internship Consortium which offers a doctoral internship in clinical psychology and belongs to the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC).  The program endorses and adheres to all policies set forth by the APPIC. You must register for the APPIC Internship Matching Program.

Applications are submitted through the AAPI online portal.  The deadline for receipt of all application materials is November 1st. Applications will be reviewed and invitations to interview at UAB-BVAMC will be made to those applicants felt to be best suited for the internship.

Intern Selection

Required Characteristics

  • Verified progression within a doctoral program in Clinical Psychology.
  • The graduate program must be APA-accredited or in the process of APA accreditation with reasonable likelihood of success.
  • US Citizenship is required for VA Stipends.
  • Selection decisions are made without regard to age, sex, race, or religion 

There are no minimum required hours for application. Our settings and faculty offer training across a broad array of clinical experiences, including neuropsychology, health psychology, trauma recovery, and rehabilitation. We welcome applicants with primary interests in assessment, intervention, or both.

Intern Selection Procedure

Application

  • Applications are due by November 1, 2021
    (date verified on APPIC website http://www.appic.org/)
  • Completed applications are reviewed for required characteristics. Individuals not meeting these requirements are notified of the withdrawal of their application.
  • ITC faculty members review and evaluate files for their match potential. The overriding mission of the admissions process is to identify applicants who will both desire and benefit most from our internship setting.
  • Ratings are compiled and the committee meets to determine applicants to be interviewed.
  • Notification of interview status is conducted via email.  

Interview

  • Interview Invitations will be sent via email no later than November 15, 2020 
  • Applicants are given two dates from which to choose and the opportunity to identify faculty they would like to meet. Interviews will be conducted virtually this year due to covid-19 pandemic, and virtual interview days will be held on December 10 and 13, 2021 for child-track applicants and on December 13, 2021 and January 18, 2022 for adult-track applicants.
  • Interviews are conducted and ratings compiled.
  • Ratings are reviewed by the committee and final selection of rank order is completed and submitted to APPIC.

Match Day

  • At the appropriate time on match day, matched interns are contacted by the Training Director.
  • Matched interns are also notified via email as well as USPS mail to obtain appropriate signatures.
  • Letters of recognition of the match are sent to each intern’s program director.

Internship Program Admissions

Briefly describe in narrative form important information to assist potential applicants in assessing their likely fit with your program. This description must be consistent with the program’s policies on intern selection and practicum and academic preparation requirements:

Strong applicants to the training program are those possessing both research productivity and clinical experience including intervention, direct assessment, and report writing.  While there is no minimum with respect to hours between intervention and assessment, applicants exceeding 600 total direct hours are more likely to be invited for interview especially in the context of published research.  For students seeking to develop neuropsychological skills, more assessment hours with report writing experience will be preferred.
