Statement of Purpose

The UAB Department of Surgery Access and Engagement Committee is dedicated to fostering an inclusive, equitable, and supportive environment in which all members of the surgical community including faculty, trainees, and staff feel valued, empowered, and able to thrive.

Our mission is to:

  • Build a culture where all department members feel supported to thrive and contribute their unique strengths

  • Promote engagement across patient care, education, administration, and research

  • Foster growth, collaboration, and a strong sense of belonging

  • Cultivate a community that reflects and serves diverse populations

  • Advance excellence in surgical practice, education, and scholarship

Through these efforts, the Access and Engagement Committee aims to enhance individual engagement, professional fulfillment, and a sense of belonging among department members, while strengthening collaboration, performance, and long-term retention across the surgical workforce. We are committed to building a departmental culture in which access, inclusion, and engagement are recognized as essential to excellence in patient care, education, administration, and research.
