Drs. Gaillard, Romine and SwensonThe UAB Department of Surgery has three new faculty joining in August: Foster Gaillard, M.D. (left), Matthew Romine, M.D. (middle), and Lacey Swenson, M.D. (right).

Gaillard earned his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. Following MUSC, he completed his general surgery training at UF Health, Shands Hospital, in Gainesville, FL. His experience at the University of Florida cemented an interest in vascular surgery before joining UAB as a vascular surgery fellow in 2018. After graduating the program in 2020, Gaillard accepted a role with the department as an assistant professor in the Division of Vascular Surgery. His professional interests are primarily the clinical practice of open and minimally invasive surgery, in addition to collaborative hands-on education of vascular and general surgical residents. His areas of specialty include the patient-centered treatment of arterial occlusive disease, aneurysmal disease, arterial dissection, and hemodialysis access.

Romine completed his medical education at the Medical College of Georgia in 2014 before proceeding to the University of Alabama-Birmingham for his general surgical training. Following completion of general surgical training, he completed his sub-specialization training in minimally invasive foregut, complex hernia, and bariatric surgery at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. His clinical interests include health outcomes following weight loss surgery, complex abdominal wall hernias, and benign esophageal disease. Romine joins the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery as a clinical instructor.

Swenson joins the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery as a clinical assistant professor. Born and raised in Montgomery, AL, Swenson went to medical school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham after graduating summa cum laude in biology and physical sciences at Auburn University’s Montgomery campus. She completed her general surgery residency at Brookwood Baptist Health in Birmingham. Her clinical interests include: robotic minimally invasive surgery, gallbladder disease, hernia repairs, colon cancer and diverticulitis and endoscopic procedures. Swenson will primarily practice at UAB Russell Clinic.
