New Faculty WelcomeThe UAB Department of Surgery is honored to welcome four new faculty members who have joined the department: Srikanth Iyer, Ph.D., William H. Cook, M.D., FACS, Angela Carter, Ph.D., and Russell G. Day, M.D., FACEP.

Srikanth Iyer, Ph.D.

Dr. Srikanth Iyer joined the UAB Department of Surgery in November 2022 as an Instructor in the Division of Surgical Oncology. Dr. Iyer obtained his Ph.D. from the National Institute of Immunology in New Delhi, India. His research focus includes the pathogenesis of acute and chronic pancreatitis. Dr. Iyer’s research devises novel strategies to augment the pancreatic reparative process after chronic injury by understanding the acinar-to-ductal metaplasia (ADM) biology, the structures that form in the pancreas in response to an injury stimulus during acute and chronic pancreatitis.

William H. Cook, M.D., FACS

Dr. William H. Cook joined the UAB Department of Surgery in February 2023 as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. Dr. Cook received his medical degree from Wake Forest University’s Bowman Gray Center for Medical Education in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and completed his General Surgery Internship and Residency at West Virginia University School of Medicine in Morgantown, West Virginia. He went on to complete a Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. Board-certified in Cardiothoracic Surgery, Dr. Cook is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Angela Carter, Ph.D.

Dr. Angela Carter, who previously served as an Instructor in the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery, is now Assistant Professor, effective February 2023. She received a B.S. in Biology and Chemistry from Southeastern Oklahoma State University and a Ph.D. in Cellular Signaling, with an emphasis in Pharmacology, from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Her doctoral work was performed in the laboratory of Dr. Paul Sternweis where she studied regulatory mechanisms of GTPases, delineating contributions of catalytic activation versus subcellular localization. Dr. Carter’s postdoctoral work was funded by the American Cancer Society and focused on identifying biomarkers with the capacity to predict tumor response to select targeted therapeutics and the development of novel animal models of neuroendocrine cancer. Dr. Carter’s current research interests involve delineating tumorigenic signaling pathways, studying mechanisms of hormone/neurotransmitter release, and engineering symbiotic organisms for therapeutic use.

Russell G. Day, M.D., FACEP

Dr. Russell G. Day joined the Department of Surgery in February with a secondary faculty appointment as Assistant Professor in the Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery. He holds a primary appointment in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine in the Department of Medicine, and another secondary position in the Department of Internal Medicine. Dr. Day serves as the Medical Director for SOCMID, the United States Air Force’s Special Operations Center for Medical Integration and Development, located at UAB. He has held a variety of roles both stateside and deployed in operational, educational, and clinical capacities across the Air Force. Dr. Day is a graduate of the UAB School of Medicine, then completed a General Surgery Internship at the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium, an Emergency Medicine Residency at Wright State University/ Wright Patterson AFB Medical Center, and a Multi-Disciplinary Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at the University of Michigan.
