The Department of Music at the University of Alabama at Birmingham has announced its calendar of public performances this spring, including some special guest artists.
The UAB Department of Music, in the College of Arts and Sciences, presents recitals and concerts by students, faculty and guest artists each fall and spring semester. Many of the performances are free and open to the public. Most performances are held in the Hulsey Center for the Arts’ Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall and UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center.
The UAB Piano Series brings the world’s finest pianists to Birmingham. This fall the UAB Piano Series will present Angel Stanislav Wang, winner of more than 35 international competitions and a silver medal at the 2023 Tchaikovsky, on Sunday, Nov. 1, at the Alys Stephens Center.

Monday, Sept. 14
Chamber Music @ AEIVA, reception 5:30 p.m., concert 6 p.m., Abroms-Engel Institute for Visual Arts, 1221 10th Ave. South. In conjunction with Erin Jane Nelson, “Living and Working,” on display at AEIVA, the UAB Department of Music will present a range of pieces and musical styles for this Chamber Music at AEIVA series performance. Since the art installation focuses on ecological justice in the Southeast, music on themes of nature and justice more broadly are featured, including works by two Southeastern composers, UAB’s own William Price, DMA, and Matthew Scott Phillips. ASO principal flutist Lisa Wienhold, pianist Yakov Kasman and cellist Sam Nordlund will play pieces by Phillips, as well as Fran Griffin, Debussy and Rachmaninoff, and jazz trio Steven Roberts, DMA, Carlos Pino and Abe Becker will conclude with music by Antonio Carlos Jobin and Hoagy Carmichael. Works to be performed include “Servant of Peace” by Dorothy Gates, “Mourning Dove” by Megumi Kanda, “Concerto in Bb Major” by Tomaso Albinoni and more. Cory Mixdorf, DMA, is part of the distinguished faculty at the University of Arkansas, where he maintains a strong studio and directs the Trombone Ensemble. Miroslava Panayotova, DMA, is a Bulgarian American pianist and a teaching assistant professor of piano at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. Free.
