BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB neonatologist Akhil Maheshwari, M.D., is one of eight young scientists in the nation chosen as a research scholar by the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA). Each scientist will receive $225,000 to help support their research over the next three years.

Maheshwari is an assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and an attending physician in the UAB Hospital Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. His research interests focus on ways in which to block the spread of cytomegalovirus (CMV) in intestinal tissue. CMV is a leading source of illness in premature babies and patients with a compromised immune defense system.
