The UAB jazz combos will perform a mix of old jazz standards and fresh, new originals written by the students themselves. UAB Percussion Ensemble, 7 p.m. in Alys Stephens Center Jemison Concert Hall, 1200 10th Ave. South. Conducted by Gene Fambrough, D.M.A. The UAB Percussion Ensemble will present a variety of literature for its fall concert, including "Kvart i Fyra" by Swedish percussionist and composer Anders Astrand. Written for four groups of percussion instruments - metals, woods, orchestral percussion and steel drums - this piece uses all 16 players in the ensemble. Also on the program: "Adaptation," by relatively new composer Nathan Daughtrey; "Whispers" by David Skidmore; "Pulse" by Henry Cowell, one of the earliest pieces for percussion ensemble, written in 1939; an arrangement of "Nuages Gris" by the piano virtuoso Franz Liszt; a planned "disaster" in the middle of the concert; and a treatment of the classic "New Math" by Andy Narell, for combined percussion ensemble and steel band. UAB Opera will present “Marvelous Mozart,” an evening of ensemble scenes from Mozart’s earliest opera to his mature works: “Bastien und Bastienne” (composed when Mozart was 12 years old) and celebrated works “Don Giovanni,” “Cosi fan tutte” and “The Marriage of Figaro.” The scenes will be accompanied by Kseniia Polstiankina at the piano. UAB Gospel Choir Fall Concert, 7 p.m. Alys Stephens Center Jemison Concert Hall, 1200 10th Ave. South. Conducted by Kevin Turner. The UAB Gospel Choir will celebrate its 14th anniversary with a holiday concert, featuring music for the entire family, especially children. On the program are musical styles from around the nation, including Hawaiian, Memphis, Miami, bluegrass and urban contemporary, holiday classics, singalongs, traditional and acoustic songs. The UAB Gospel Choir recordings will be available for purchase. General admission tickets are $7; $6 for UAB employees and students with valid I.D. and for children 12 and under; and a special $5 group rate for 20 or more tickets, advance purchase required.
