A memorial service for William “Bill” Self, Ph.D., associate professor of Communication Studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3 in Heritage Hall Room 102, 1401 University Blvd. Self, 53, died Thursday, Nov. 19.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A memorial service for William "Bill" Self, Ph.D., associate professor of Communication Studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3 in Heritage Hall Room 102, 1401 University Blvd. Self, 53, died Thursday, Nov. 19.

Self taught media law in the UAB Department of Communication Studies where he had been a member of the faculty since 1999. He became an associate professor in 2002.

"Dr. Bill Self was truly one of the best human beings, teacher, scholar to his students and the department," said Virginia Peck Richmond, Ph.D., Communication Studies chair. "He gave time, intellectual knowledge and countless hours to his students and colleagues. It is with deep regret and sorrow that we mourn his passing."

Self earned a law degree from the Cumberland School of Law in 1981 and his doctorate from the University of Alabama in 1997.
