University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing alumna Timiya S. Nolan, PhD, APRN-CNP, ANP-BC, FAAN (BSN 2008, MSN 2011, PhD 2016), has been elected to the Oncology Nursing Society Board of Directors. The achievement recognizes her innovation, excellence and advocacy in advancing oncology nursing and cancer care. She will begin her three-year term in May.
Nolan is a three-time alumna of the School and is Associate Director for Community Outreach & Engagement at the UAB O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center and Associate Professor in the UAB Division of General Internal Medicine and Population Science. Her research focuses on self-management of breast cancer and cardiovascular disease with the goal of enhancing the health of underserved populations.
“Serving on the Board of the Oncology Nursing Society is an honor,” Nolan said. “Since joining in 2014 at the encouragement of my mentor, Dr. Karen Meneses, I have seen the critical role ONS plays in shaping oncology nursing. I look forward to contributing to efforts that strengthen oncology nursing as a profession and accelerate the translation of research into evidence-based care that improves outcomes for patients and communities.”
Nolan studied breast cancer survivorship disparities in young and African American populations alongside the late Professor and Associate Dean for Research and Scholarship Karen Meneses, PhD, RN, FAAN. Nolan earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Master of Science in Nursing and Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing from the School. Nolan’s career exemplifies the power, impact and possibilities of the nursing profession.
"I am truly excited that my path has led me to ONS membership, service, and now greater opportunities for leadership,” Nolan said.
In 2024, the National Black Nurses Association recognized Nolan as the Nurse Researcher of the Year. In 2023, Nolan was named a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, and the National Minority Quality Forum selected her for its 40 Under 40 Leaders in Minority HealthOpens an external link.. In 2022, she received the Oncology Nursing Society’s Victoria Mock New Investigator Award which recognizes the contributions of new investigators in building a scientific foundation for oncology nursing practice.
