Sixteen faculty and alumni honored by B-Metro

B metro resizedRTEach year Birmingham's B-Metro magazine highlights Alabama nursing professionals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, innovation and expertise in their field. This year 16 faculty and alumni from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing were honored in the Excellence in Nursing feature.

Faculty recipients of the 2015 Excellence in Nursing awards are Ashley Hodges, PhD, CRNP, WHNP-BC, recognized for expertise in innovative distance education, curriculum evaluation and clinical and educational leadership; Candace C. Knight, PhD, RN, recognized for her teaching leadership in the maternal child nursing program at the UAB School of Nursing; Susan McMullan, PhD, MSN, CRNA, recognized for her expertise in pediatric and cardiovascular anesthesia; Kaitrin Parris, DNP, RN, recognized for her experience in nursing administration, nursing education and home care; and Tedra Smith, DNP, CRNP, CRNP-PC, recognized for her innovative teaching methods in pediatric simulation education; and Marla Couture, MSN, CRNP, NNPC, recognized for her leadership role in the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Specialty track at the UAB School of Nursing. Hodges, Knight and Smith are also alumna of the School.

Alumni recipients are Carol Crow, BSN 1992, MSN 1997; Joann Devaney, MSN 2013; Mary Grace Kelleher, BSN 2014; Kelsey Mitchell, BSN 2010; Gwen Pernell, BSN 1976, MSN 1983, DNP 2015; Chablis Shultz, MSN 2008; Stacy Sexton, BSN 2004; Julie Tyrrell, BSN 2010; Brenda Vason, BSN 1978; and Alyssa Webb, MSN 2014.

Award winners were profiled in the July issue of the magazine and were recognized at an awards ceremony on August 20, 2015 at Rosewood Hall in Homewood, Ala.
