DNP student wins grad school competition

The competition celebrates doctoral research and encourages students to effectively explain their research in three minutes. After winning the University-wide competition in November 2019, Thompson, a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) student at the UAB School of Nursing moves on to a regional competition in March.

Thompson’s presentation, titled “Movie Magic: Changing the Patient’s Perception,” discussed the DNP project she completed with fellow students Rosemary Evans, a CRNA in Atlanta, and Mary Beth Greenway, a CRNA in Birmingham. Their project included an 8-minute video explaining pain management options for labor and delivery patients. When the video was used during patient education, they saw increased patient satisfaction and confidence in their decision. They are now pursuing publication for their findings.

“In the final round, the judges were community members — business owners and public officials,” Thompson said. “I loved that they were excited about my quality improvement and patient education project. Participating also allowed me to share more information about doctorate options for nurses. It was empowering to go through this process and to tell not just the judges, but also my fellow competitors, that nursing is important, and nurses make a big impact in health care.”

Thompson earned her Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) from the UAB School of Nursing in 2000.

PhD student Shameka Rodgers also participated in the competition and made it to the final round. Her presentation was titled, “Harry Potter and the Child with Poor Sleep Quality.”
