A New BOV Member and a New Fundraiser

Wine_Loft_Party.jpgThe Board of Visitors (BOV) has a new member –Eileen S. Meyer –and Eileen and husband Dr. Bruce E. Burns, a BOV member since 2012, have added a fundraiser to ways they support the UAB School of Nursing.

Bruce launched support in 2011, by endowing a scholarship at the School as his surprise gift to Eileen on her 40th birthday. The scholarship honors Eileen as a master’s graduate of the School and recognizes her career as a UAB nurse practitioner in cardiothStudents_at_Wine_Loft_Party.pngoracic surgery.

Next, Bruce and Eileen modified their wills to include the School.  Then, on August 29, they hosted a fundraiser benefiting the School’s Nursing Skills Lab, at the Wine Loft in downtown Birmingham.  The event also celebrated the anniversary of Bruce and Eileen’s first date 20 years ago.

“It’s a major honor to come on the Board of Visitors,” said Eileen.  Pleased about Eileen’s becoming a BOV member, Bruce said, “I love it!”

Now a lead nurse practitioner, Eileen for 17 years has cared for UAB patients with acquired and congenital heart problems –working on teams led by famed UAB cardiothoracic surgeons, first Dr. Alfred D. “Al” Pacifico and now Dr. James K. “Jim” Kirklin.  She currently also is enrolled in the UAB School of Nursing Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program.

“Eileen and I have begun work on a 2015 fundraiser for the School, similar to the Wine Loft event,” said Bruce, a Princeton Baptist Medical Center emergency room physician.  “To make the 2015 event bigger, we are securing sponsorships.”
