University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing alumna V. Andrea Parodi, RN, PhD, received first place at the Society for Simulation in Healthcare’s (SSH) International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare (IMSH) for the academic faculty entry division and received the “Overall Best in Show” award.

Parodi headshotDr. V. Andrea ParodiParodi is a research associate professor at Old Dominion University and lead for healthcare/medical modeling and simulation research at the Virginia Modeling Analysis and Simulation Center (VMASC) in Suffolk, Virginia.

She and the VMASC team’s submission, “Creating Integrated Medical Education Experiences for Military Trauma Teams Using Deliberate Practice, Layers of Simulation, and Game-Based Guided Tutorials,” incorporated aspects of teaching, learning and training into the development of an avatar-guided, computer-based teaching and testing program for U.S. Department of Defense clinicians. It focuses on TeamSTEPPS, a patient safety and teamwork efficiency program, as well as a serious game-based teaching and testing military trauma training program prototype.

Parodi’s work was made possible through U.S. Department of Defense research funding and close collaboration with clinicians and scientists from the Navy, Army and Air Force.

The IMSH conference, held this year in Orlando, Florida, is the world’s largest dedicated to health care simulation learning, research and scholarship.

Parodi earned her Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (PhD) from the UAB School of Nursing in 1997.

The UAB School of Nursing PhD Program, the only one in Alabama, prepares nurses as researchers, faculty and leaders who will make substantive contributions to education and science in nursing with the goal of becoming independently funded investigators whose work will ultimately improve health care outcomes for all patients.
