By Amanda E.H. Pritchard

University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing Associate Professor, Assistant Dean for Graduate Clinical Education – DNP and Alumnus Curry Bordelon, DNP, MBA, CRNP (DNP 2016), along with Alumni Blake Smith, MSN, RN (MSN 2017) and Monica Squires, CPNP (MSN 2012), have been named to the 2023 UAB Excellence in Business Top 25 by the UAB National Alumni Society. The awards are designed to identify, recognize and celebrate the success of the top alumni-owned and alumni-managed businesses.

Bordelon and Smith are being recognized for their work with the American Association for Men in Nursing. As the current Vice President, Bordelon is committed and motivated to expand his presence within the organization. For Smith as the immediate past president, he continually strives to advocate for male inclusion in the nursing profession.

“To be recognized by professionals outside of the nursing world for the work we have done for our communities is special. This recognition is a solidification and one example of the expertise nursing provides the public expanding from direct patient care.,” Smith said. “This prestigious recognition from UAB helps AAMN by providing further credibility to the organization’s work to benefit men's health and minority health disparities awareness and intervention.”

Agreeing, Bordelon said, “It is a privilege to be recognized as a UAB alum making a difference in the AAMN organization and within our communities. My service within professional nursing organizations such as AAMN affords me the ability to utilize the many skills obtained through the UAB School of Nursing and influence excellence in education, men's health, research and partnership activities.”

Squires earned this honor for establishing Springville Pediatrics, where she can provide quality care in what she describes as both a fun and professional environment.

“Receiving this accolade is both humbling and inspiring. As any business owner knows, this endeavor takes a significant amount of sacrifice, discipline and determination. Success is not simply measured by financial stability or profitability. In my opinion, success is also measured by the reputation of your business, the work environment and opportunities you create for your team, as well as the reinvestment into people and communities,” Squires said. “To be recognized with this honor within the first five years of business is exciting and very motivating for me. It is also reaffirming to my team that we can grow and expand, reaching more underserved communities and children and devote ourselves to serving.”

Award recipients will be honored during a ceremony at the UAB National Alumni Society House on June 22.
